In a St. Louis suburb of all places!!! Cardinal fans most hated player from the great New York Mets teams of the 1980`s now resides in O`Fallon, Missouri which is 30 miles from Busch Stadium. Strawberry met a St. Louis girl named Tracy Boulware and the two recently got married. A co-worker of mine attends the same church as Strawberry. So far he seems to be enjoying his time in the midwest. "At first, Tracy had to twist my arm to come, says Strawberry. "I was like, "There`s no way I`m going to St. Louis.....this was my rival town. But its a place where I believe God sent me and my wife."

"I like it here. It`s more home-like, has a nice family atmosphere. People here are really nice. Its different than anywhere. New York, Florida, California-people are so rude."

Arguably, one of the greatest ballplayers of the 1980`s, Strawberry spends much of his time reading the bible and preaching his faith while studying to be a minister. And my co-worker tells me that he is impressed by the way Strawberry spends time talking baseball with kids from the church. I for one welcome Darryl Strawberry to St. Louis. Hopefully with time, he will become a right thinking Cardinals fan and celebrate with us on Opening Day when they raise the World Series championship banner at the stadium. :smilestar

Hey Uncle bill,

That is great news that you tracked down our southern California Crenshaw high school Srawberry! He has definitely had his share of problems and challenges, but I never thought he was malicious or mean, he's just a human with amazing God given talent, but sadly also fought with a horrific drug addiction while trying to find his place in this life....

I just hope for his happiness, and that he stays clean, and based on what you found out, it seems that he may be finally finding the peace he always seemed to seek....it sounds like a great healthy enviornment for him.....

Thanks, unclebill.... :smilestar

Thanks for responding, Jaba. :cool2: I didn`t think anyone cared. Strawberry was perhaps the most gifted young player I have seen in all my years as a fan. If he would have stayed off drugs he may have been one of the all time greats. But hopefully he will find peace in the midwest and live a happy life.

Strawberry went to Crenshaw high school in south los angeles, which at the time was a nationally recognized basketball powerhouse, and they were periannual California state basketball champions, but Strawberry, the baseball player, is arguably the best pure athelete that school has ever produced....

He always struck me as a good man at heart, but the New York and Los Angeles fast lane life got the better of him.....

I am glad he is well, unclebill.....your thread really made my day........ :wavingguy

I hope he can stay clean and sober now. Sadly, his time with the Dodgers was one of wasted talent and self-destruction for him.

As long as I live, I will never forget the home run Strawberry hit off Ken Dayley of the Cardinals at Busch Stadium in 1985. I was at the game with a few buddies, and we were sitting in the left field bleachers and had a perfect view. The ball hit the top of the right field scoreboard, and was still on the rise. Even though I hated the Mets, I couldn`t help but admire what had just happened. I had the privledge of watching Mark McGwire hit many home runs in his three years in St. Louis, and the moonshot that Strawberry hit was just as impressive. And Busch was not an easy park to hit homers in during the 80`s. It was very pitcher friendly. Thanks for your imput, guys. :bowing:

When he played,. I used to hate Strawberry. That is probably because at the time, my Atlanta Braves were in last place, and the Mets were in first or second every year, and he perpetually used to torment my Braves with frustrating home runs. I got a measure of revenge in 1991, when the Braves beat Strawberry's Dodgers by one game, for the division title
That ancient history aside, it is good to hear that Darryl has turned his life around. Hopefully, he can stay substance free, and on the right path.

Mitch
