Total Guitar magazine ran a reader poll on the best riffs of all time and for once a public poll seems to be pretty damn good!

1. Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses
2. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
3. Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
4. Smoke On The Water - Deep Purple
5. Enter Sandman - Metallica
6. Layla - Derek & The Dominoes/Eric Clapton
7. Master Of Puppets - Metallica
8. Back In Black - AC/DC
9. Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix
10. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
11. Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne
12. All Right Now - Free
13. Plug In Baby - Muse
14. Black Dog - Led Zeppelin
15. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love - Van Halen
16. Walk This Way - Aerosmith w Run DMC
17. Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream
18. No-One Knows - Queens Of The Stone Age
19. Paradise City - Guns N' Roses
20. Killing In The Name - Rage Against The Machine

Of course if it were my choices I'd have a lot more Metallica in there (Hetfield = Riff God), at least one Iron Maiden track and where were the Rolling Stones?

So what would y'all have gone for? Oh. and remember it's riffs not solos this was looking at.

Just seen Metallica this weekend

And would have to concur with Metallica.. I think the riff on Master of Puppets is sublime and just ** Shivers* For anyonw who has seen this done live.. it literally makes the shivers roll down your spine and your moputh drop open

Hmm Not sure if this would count but Civil War also by G N R?

Screw Metallica... Led Zeppelin should've been at the top of this list, and I can't believe Pink Floyd wasn't on this list. Such poor taste... Nirvana shouldn't even be on this list....

I have heard that "Sweet Child O' Mine" is a tough piece to play and should be practiced by Guitar players to get truely good...

Are you crazy? Nirvana is the king of grunge. Besides, Smells like Teen Spirit was a classic. I would've put them #1 instead of 2😀

Nirvana gets all the credit for grunge, but Soundgarden, Pearl Jam (the first 3 albums), and Alice in Chains are all better...

I don't know......maybe it's just me but......
Nirvana...the king of "grunge"?

I think it's because of that stupid word "grunge". They were even refering to Neil Young as the "godfather of grunge" 9 years ago.
I mean, c'mon now!

As far as good guitar riffs.....

"Tush" -ZZ-Top
"All Night Long" -Rainbow
"Beautiful Girls" -Van Halen
"Rockin' Me", "The Stake", or "Jet Airliner" -Steve Miller
"Slow Ride" -Foghat

In no particular order:

Eruption-Van Halen
Iron Man-Black Sabbath
Comfortably Numb-Pink Floyd
Crossroads-Cream
Texas Flood-Stevie Ray Vaughn
Sweet Child O'Mine-Guns N'Roses
Master of Puppets-Metallica
Fade to Black-Metallica
Cocaine-Eric Clapton

This is what I came up with off the top of my head.I'm sure I'm leaving a few hundred or so out.

The best part about this list is that my local radio station was going over the top 20 and playing the riffs to the songs...
Great ride to work!!! 🙂
