Florida Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez was taken out of a game yesterday for not hustling on a defensive play. He was then benched during today's game as well, for not apologizing to his team for a lack of effort. Ramirez claims he doesn't need to apologize, and took some shots at his manager as well.

What are your thoughts on this?

I personally think this reflects very poorly on the character of the young superstar, and his manager should be commended for standing up to him (as should the team, who won their game handily without Hanley).

I give a standing ovation to Freddie Gonzalez for benching Hanley Ramirez. A message needs to be sent to these young prima-donnas that if you are going to play a team game you play hard all the time.

I like this move. It is good to show an overpaid, lazy player that he will be disciplined for not hustling.

Being a Mets fan, 4u may have heard the famous story in 1969 when Mets manager Gil Hodges removed Cleon Jones from a game on a rainy day at Shea Stadium for not hustling after a ball. In fact, Hodges kept Jones on the bench for an entire weekend series against the Braves after the incident, before finally putting him back in the lineup. The message was clear: If you dont play hard and try your best always, you dont play.

Kudos to Gonzalez.

Ramirez really loafed on that play!!! not only did the manager say something but I am sure the veteran players on the team were in Hanley's face. They will either have to get him back on the same page with the rest of the team or trade him. They are paying him WAY too much money to keep him on the bench.

Supposedly Andre Dawson and Tony Pena (I think) sat Ramirez down and told him to cut the crap. From what I've heard, Dawson made his comments brief, because he would have decked Ramirez if he gave him any sass.

Hopefully the Marlins can put this behind them. Hanley is the face of that franchise, and they need to be on the same page.

I agree with the manager. You gotta make a statement with these guys. Ramirez is such a great talent, but those types of actions can bring down the whole team.

Settled? For now. I don't think Hanley will be sticking with the Marlins much longer than he has to, but this will likely fade away for the moment.
