It's the day set aside to celebrate Canada becoming a nation in 1867 with the signing of the "British North America Act", legally recognizing Canada as an independent nation instead of a colony of the British Empire.

So yes, in a way, a Canadian Independence day. With the stroke of a pen, instead of the flare of a musket. But that approach worked too!
