Has An Illness Ever Been a Blessing In Disguise?

Aside from being able to miss school as a child, or work, if you wanted a day off, as an adult, have any of you ever gotten sick, and felt: "Gee, this happened at the right time" . I think it may have for me. Let me explain.
As many forum members know, I have been battling weight and blood pressure issues over the past year plus, and I've done great, losing over 25 pounds, and getting my BP down to normal levels. Currently, on orders of my doctor, I am not supposed to be an ounce over 175 pounds, or I will be subjected to monthly visits. (Not fun, of course!). This week, I was on the scale, and weighed in at 174, which I was not thrilled about. Then, the last 24 hours, I have been hit with a nasty stomach problem. I'm feeling better today, I hope, but when I weighed myself this morning, I was 171.2 pounds, which is the exact same weight I was when I last saw my Dr in January. Ironically, and I did not plan this, I have an appt with him this Tuesday morning, and he told me if I come in at 171-172, he can usually see me no more than every six months. As crappy as I've felt since yesterday, I think this may have been a blessing in disguise. Hopefully, he will tell me:" You're fine, Mitch, see you around your birthday". (Which is January 23, 2007). I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Anyhow, just wanted to tell about this. Gosh, if getting sick ever happened at the "right time" if there is such a thing, this was it for me.

I wouldn't say sick as such but when I injured my knee it made me think about my life.........in doing so I found God. I personally think it happened at the right time as I was young (still am lol) so I could change my lifestyle for the better and start thinking about my future.

Way to go with your weight and BP, it's always good when you reach your goal and maintain it.

Finding God must have been very comforting to you, Kust. While injuring one's knee is most painful, it sounds like you were able to better your life from it.
Thanks for the support about the weight and BP. It wasnt easy. In March, 2005, I was 197 lbs, with BP through the roof. Since losing over 25 lbs, my BP is normal, and I am healthy. I feel great, and I look forward to getting this visit over with, and going on with life.

Yeah it did.

Keep us informed about how your visit goes, all the best with it.

yea one winter david kept getting sick. so he decided to have a check up.. and it turned out he was diabetic. that's why he kept getting sick that year. and also seeing his uncle die of the disease was a blessing in disguise. his uncle hadn't taken care of his diabetes, and developed a blister on his foot that he let go for too long. they amputated his toe, but by then it was too late, and gangrene had spread throughout his body. david was at his death bed, and he learned a lesson of how to always keep your diabetes under control. it wasn't a pretty sight to see how his uncle died..

Kust, thanks for the good wishes, my friend.

Melanie, wow. That was fortunate. Glad that David has brought his diabetes under control.

I can recall one other time that an illness was fortunate. Three years ago, my father kept having burning sensation, heartburn, and indigestion feeling in his chest. He went to the doctor, and it turned out that he had a heart problem, a blocked artery, for which he needed two angioplasty procedures. He seems fine now, God willing, but if he hadn't had the indigestion feeling, on a constant basis, he might never have known that he had a heart problem, which needed to be fixed, and thankfully was.
I feel okay today, so I will be going out, and watching my eating. If I lose a couple of pounds more, I can always gain it back after Tuesday.

Gald to hear you are doing so well Mitch.Keep up the good work!!

Thanks, bug. It is appreciated, my friend. I will post again on Tuesday after I see my Dr.

In high school, dealing with maintaining a 3.0, countless extracurricular activities, and also a psychotic mother, I'd get sick constantly. Mostly ear infections and sinus infections.

Right before finals during my sophomore year, I got a pretty bad ear infection. My mom told me I was over-reacting and that I was fine.

Two weeks went by, many of those nights I cried myself to sleep because my head hurt so much.

I'd go to school every other day, trying to get as much studying in as I could. Paying attention in Chemistry was useless. I could barely hear.

I finally went to the doctor, only because my younger sister was "really sick."

The doctor took one look in my ear and gasped. This obviously wasn't a good thing. I had double ear infections that were so bad, my ears were almost bleeding and my doctor said it was lucky I wasn't permanently deaf.

My mom, being a nurse, I thought would feel a little bad, but she didn't.

After I got better, it just put a lot of things into perspective. I take a lot less for granted, and I learned a little more about the sociopath that is my mother.

I just think about all the things that would have changed, had I not gone to the doctor. Since it was only by chance that I ended up going anyway.

I wouldn't be able to hear voices, laughter, music...

Wow, Mairead. From your description, I definitely see why your illness was a blessing in disguise. Thank heavens you went to the Dr, and took care of your problem. I'm sorry to hear about how your mom is. My father is a lot like that.
