Hopefully, a benign thread.

With the hurricane season at its peak, I wanted to start this thread.. to inquire whether forum members have ever been affected by a hurricane.

Most of us, in the North East, mid Atlantic, were affected by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. My area had hurricane force winds, but no power failures, thankfully. Although, as I posted at the time, I went into Manhattan a couple of days after the storm, and much of the Times Square area, had no power.

The one other hurricane that I remember vividly, was Hurricane Gloria in 1985. I was living in Westport, Ct, at the time. In fact, in the Wikipedia article about Gloria, it states that "Gloria made it's final landfall near Westport". Winds were about 90 mph, and we had no power for over 24 hours.

Those are the two hurricanes that I remember details of. My parents mentioned that we had a hurricane when we lived in Fort Lee, NJ in 1976, Hurricane Belle. I don't remember it though.

Anyhow, that's the topic, forum members affected by a hurricane.

Isabel, Irene, & Sandy are the only ones I can really Recall.

Hurricane Sandy did cause some Damage for my Area, but it wasn't as bad as Isabel & Irene.

And between Isabel & Irene, Isabel was without a doubt the worst.

During hurricane Sandy we lost power for 4 days but that was the only major hurricane I recall. Hurricane Gloria in 1985 I have one of my earliest memories (I was under 2 years old) of my dad planning to go to work until my mom told him that was crazy LOL.

ike back in 08, lost all our food and went 21 days with out power

Recently, Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Irene, already mentioned above.

When I was a small child, Hurricane Diane killed well over 100 people and did reach New York, although its worst damage was down in North Carolina.

I was affected by Hurricane Katrina, but only in the least serious of ways compared to those that were REALLY affected.

I simply had a holiday booked to Florida, first time out of Europe, but we had to change plans and ended up in the South of Spain, so missed out on Florida, had a shorter holiday than planned and lost some money.

I vividly remember the Great Storm of 1987, which was a UK storm of hurricane-force winds, although not officially classified as a hurricane, due, I think, to its origin and low levels of precipitation. That's the closest to a hurricane that I've experienced in the UK - I remember walking home from school about 9 years old, having been sent home early in the interest of safety, fence panels blowing all over the road, wheelie-bins running away with themselves, trees falling down, power lost to our home etc. Mother Nature is mighty impressive.

Incidentally, We had a whale of a time in Spain in the end, went on a terrifying water slide, got lost in a particularly promiscuous area, being approached by all sorts of unsavoury characters near the beach, crashing one hire car, dropping the keys to the second hire car down the drain, upsetting some fellow hotel guests by accidentally misusing a particular common Spanish phrase and having a delayed take-off (free alcohol provided as compensation).

huh.... I live in the bowling alley of hurricanes. If there is an upside to it, we are always prepared.

Yes.

Every time a sun spot is rumored to appear on mars, the oil companies raise their prices.

So it stands to reason that anytime some freak in the business industry on earth gets a hangnail, they raise the prices.

This obviously means that gas prices go up if there is a hurricane that dosen't even hit the shore.

Yes. I have been affected by a hurricane.
