and it just comes back to hurt you in the end? What happened, how long did you try, what happened in the end?

Well, I usually don't get so involved in people's problems that they could hurt me. I tend to do all that I can for a person, but if they clearly show they don't want my help, and do so repeatedly, I back off. You can only help people who want your help.

Been there, done that... 'Stuff that don't kill you make you stronger'...

No good deed goes unpunished.
I try to be as good and helpful as I possibly can, but at the same time, you can't be naive - come on. Being a female, you always have to be extremely aware of your surroundings, and all the possible outcomes the situation could take. But then again, when it's an immediate cause and you're close by, you don't really have time to contemplate on those thoughts beforehand. Maybe during or afterwards, I 'unno.

I've been there and did all I could even to the point where my own life was compromised, but in the end there is a limit to what you can do. You will never control all the variables in another's life. So really need to understand that sometimes no matter how good a friend you are the universe will just be against you and at will explode in your face. That does suck, plain and simple. It hurts, but you really need to accept the fact that you never really had a chance to begin with. (At least in my case that was true, but it can be applied to another.) You pick up the pieces and move on.

It's no good if you try to save someone who's drowning, and it's virtually certain that not only can't you save them but you'll end up drowning yourself.

You know. That actually reminds me of a specific sermon/message. It was a very memorable demonstration. Someone stood on a chair, and they tried to pull another person up. The person who was standing below though, was easily capable of pulling the person on the chair down. Hmm...
