MEF2A has been identified as the first heart attack gene. The gene was isolated from a family in Iowa with a history of heart problems by Dr. Eric Topol. Topol said without this gene, most are on their way to leading a healthy life, but with the gene, heart attack is destined for the owner. This gene has a direct link to the build up of plaque in arteries which causes them to become blocked. Because it has only been tested in one family (with around 100 participants) more research is needed to find if the gene is an inherited mutation.
