I got a trojan horse called backdoor.agent.ba in my home machine on June 24. I can't even connect to the net now. Symantec does not list a fix for it. I ran an AVG virus protection program that tells me what file it's in but says it can't eliminate it or move it to the virus vault. I can't delete the file. It won't highlight to let me . The machine shuts down if I try. I can't even always get the machine to start in safe mode to try to back up my files before I reformat my hard drive. If anybody has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate the help. I can look here again on Tuesday evening when I am at work again. Until then I am stranded, no net. Thanks, Karen

sadly, that means the people who sent you the trojan have already missed all your system. There are ways for you to delete the file wich is acting as the trojan door but even if you delete it you´ll still be unable to get to the internet cause that must be something the other persson changed on your system. I guess he must have deleted you some files or edited others to mess with your pc. This kind of activity is almost allways seen badly among hackers so hope he can meet someone of his size one of these days.
To backup whatever you want is not hard, you can ask someone a boot CD or disk, then change on your BIOS the booting sequence so that your pc will allways start from the said CD or disk. The last one should ideally be able to boot your pc in DOS mode. Once you achieve this you should be able to copy and move whatever you want. You could also try and delete the trojan then but beer in mind you´ll most likely have to install a new OS as soon as you get trojan free.

IF all else fails, you can reformat the hard drive. You will loose anything you have saved and the PC will be back to as it was when you took it out of the box although, when I did this last year when my PC totally crashed due to a virus/spyware/worm combo the ate everything slowly until the was nothing left but a huge paperweight on my desk, this pc still cannot perform right. YOUR problem may be able to be remedied one way or another.
