So i go along fine for years...when bingo...as soon as i reach fifty plus, my heredity decides to show it's hand...first my cholesterol goes sky high...and i've had low cholesterol all my life..first year, i decide to ignore it..i mean after all..i don't eat foods high in that sort of fat..and i exercise damn it...second year..it's even higher...almost three hundred...sighs..so against my inner doubts...which is i hate taking meds...i go on lipitor..he also informs me i have high blood pressure..but we choose not to do anything that year...

this last year...well my blood pressure is higher...but yippee...he says i should frame my cholesterol count..so he puts me on a high blood pressure med..and the ironic thing about all this is..i've always had bloody damn normal bp...even in moments of great crises...annoyingly normal to tell you the truth..and this high blood pressure now makes me pissed off at my heredity...all this i inherited from my father...so he puts me on a bp med...i take it..reluctantly...after a month or so, i'm still coughing up half a lung at night..which is a side effect..so i quit....then hubby gets on me in early june or july..not sure...says call the doctor for another med...so i do...and they change the BP med...and guess what..it made me cough also..i mean damn..so i've quit taking it also...they gave me a pill that also makes me cough??? after i told them why i quit the first one? i remember saying don't give me a med that would make me hyper...

so at the moment i'm not on any high blood pressure med...will i die, do you think?

I know how you feel, last year my blood pressure was up for the first time in my life.
I started doing more activities that I enjoy and tried to meditate whenever possible.
Now I'm normal again, although this may not be the best fix for your situation.
I hope your BP improves.

i am fairly active as it is...this is hereditary...nothing i did caused it...but thanks..

To pick up misterpedi's point, have you checked out natural methods of controlling your BP? My dad was on BP meds, but they had some rather vexing side effects. So he controlled his BP using lecithin. No memory of his dosages or frequency of dosage (though I think it was a lot. He used the liquid lecithin.

Trouble with asking regular doctors about natural remedies is that most have no clue about them (or they think they're "quackery"). A doctor who knows natural remedies is a good thing if you can find a good one. Naturally, you should never stop any medication without a doctor's supervision.

Most people over 50 have high blood pressure, regardless of heredity. You should not stop taking your meds without checking with your doctor or pharmacist first -- there are other classes of drugs with fewer side effects, which you can discuss with your doctor. I agree with Kopfhorer that mild HBP can be treated with lifestyle changes, such as a low-sodium diet and possibly garlic and parsley concentrate or fish liver oil. However, untreated HBP, especially with high cholesterol, can be fatal.

the hollywood brother got to wonder why they did not give you choloestorl medicine to clear you of any potential blockage areas. most of the choloestrol medicines known as statins work great and if your bad cholestrol goes down and you exercise then your blood pressure may drop as well without the pills that make you cough

HollywoodBro..i am on cholesterol medicine...lipitor...and i started taking my old HB med yesterday...if i cough i cough..sighs..

Lipitor will not make you cough. Only the ACE Inhibitors will do that (used for BP and heart). Rarely, the ARB's will cause it (all of them end with -artan). I would have you tell them to put you on a calcium channel blocker, Beta-blocker or hydroclorothiazide for your BP

I take hydrochlorothiazide for my high diastolic pressure. It works well and no coughing for me. I take atenolol (a beta blocker) as well. I'm a firm believer in better living through chemistry... otherwise, I couldn't have pets and breathe.
