Anyone who likes Suikoden II is ok in my book 🙂. You seem to be improving with each update. Keep it up man!

Psh, Suikoden pales in comparison to the better, REAL RPGs (aka, Western ones)

They're apples and and oranges IMO. Suikoden dosen't have deep gameplay like alot of western RPGs, but the characters and story are generally good and the world is interesting. Most western rpgs have decent writing but shit stories and virtually no likable characters of any sort(I'm not including the god of all games, aka Planescape Torment 😀 ).

O_O! I am just now reading this, and I can't believe it. It boggles the mind!

Japan is where almost all of the RPG's come from -- I can't name a single RPG of Western origin, for console, I mean. Perhaps someone could help me out?

By the way, not a bad drawing there, Ghost. ^_^

EDIT: Oh, I remember one now: Those games based off of Everquest for the PS2. Don't even know the names, I'm so amazing.

You are aware that RPGs were created here, right?
Dungeons and Dragons, anyone?
While not the RPG you're used to, had it not been for Pen&Paper RPGs, games like Final Fantasy would have never been made.

Video game RPGs started way back on the PC, long before Square ever entered the market.

The main difference between the two is Japanese "RPGs" are extremely linear.
In Western RPGs, generally the choices you make throughout the game determine the outcome.
You raise your guy's stats in the manner you wish, not the automatic style of FF. Example: I'm not forced to make the hero a sword wielding warrior in WRPGs (unlike most FFs). If I want to be an archer, I can train my character in those skills. If I want to be a mage, I can work at that.

JRPGs usually force you to go one linear path, but WRPGs are different.
Just look at Morrowind.
Nothing more needs to be said.

Square took the concepts of WRPGs and... dumbed them down for consoles.
Thankfully now to hardware like the Xbox, porting and creating WRPGs for consoles is easily done.

The only downfall to Western RPGs, is they're so openended the story isn't as... set-out as say Final Fantasy, so they tend to not be as developed.

The reason you've probably heard very little of Western RPGs, is because they are mainly on PC and Xbox. Juding from your reactions, I predict you are a PS2 person.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but I can think of one JRPG that let you create your characters the way you wanted. I can't remember the name at all, but it was for the original Playstation when it was pretty new.

The game was basically a computerized pen-and-paper RPG, which is why me and my friends agreed to play it. It could handle up to 4 players, allowing you to play at once on one screen, running around, throwing spells and swinging swords. Kinda like a MMORPG, but...without an M and an O.

What makes me remember it is that you created your character from scratch at the beginning. You chose your class, assigned stats, chose appearence, etc. Your unique character was then saved to a memory card (if I remember right, the characters alone took up a ton of space, probably their own card).

If this sounds familiar to anyone, if anyone knows the name of this game, I'd be extremely greatful if you'd tell me. XD;

I know RPG's started here, in fact, I remember buying a couple crappy ones from back in the day, and they were garbage. =p Still, I don't remember ever playing one from here, in like the past 15 years or so, that I liked very much. And I don't particularly care for D&D, either. Morrowind isn't any good either, in my opinion.

Personally, I think of it as Square taking the concepts of WRPGs and making them better. I mostly play RPGs for storyline, not for the actual gaming involved -- well, most of the time, at least after the initial battles and stuff. Which may be where we differ the most.

And yeah, the only games I play on the PC are MMORPG's, which I must admit, are the only games I have found to be extremely better than asian ones. I do have an Xbox, but I am just now playing my second game for it, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. I played Fable, too, but that's it. I can't even think of any RPGs for Xbox at the moment... the only RPG I actually knew, and was looking forward to before it was cancelled, but True Fantasy Live Online, which was an MMO.

However, there are no other games for Xbox that look good at all to me. PS2 and Gamecube pretty much has all the games I'll want.
