During the late 19th century, a German baker created a sweet pastry disc with sugar coating on the flat side. One of the ingredients was Ammoniumbicarbonate (baking powder), so he called it "Ammonikaner".
This sounded too complicated and too chemical for his customers; they simply asked for "Amerikaner" (American), and so this German pastry became an American, although the Americans didn't even know it. This sweet delicacy became highly popular, just like donuts in the States. I remember eating a lot of them when I was a kid.
Today, I saw that the "American" has changed it's nationality: At the bakery around the corner, they're selling them as "Europeans". Why? They added a small logo of the European Soccer Championship to the sugar-coated site.
So a measly soccer ball can transform an American to a European! 😀
