Baseball fans like mils know what I'm talking about. (No, not making fun of your age, my friend).
In baseball's "new world", likely because of the mega sky high payrolls, teams have to take advantage of every last home date, squeezing in all 81.
As late as the.. 70s, teams had many doubleheaders a year. Sunday DH's, twinight DH's. Even in the 1980s, the Mets had one scheduled DH a year, usually on a Sunday, and if a rainout occurred, they would have a twi night or Sunday DH to make it up. I experienced this twice, once in 1986 at Shea between the Mets and Cubs, and another in 1987 in Atlanta, after a rainout the previous night between the Mets and Braves, with both instances creating a 5 or
530pm twi night DH.
Now.. the new fangled DH, if needed is the "Day-Night" Doubleheader. Usually with one game at 1pm local time, and another at 7pm local time, thus creating two separate admissions. This will happen tomorrow between the Mets and Braves during their series in Atlanta, because of a rainout the last time the Mets were there.
This situation is most inconvenient for season ticket holders, as they have to wait.,. 3 hrs after the first game, for the nightcap to start. In the old days, one game of the DH would be over, the field would be dragged, pitchers would warm up, and the second game would start within a half hour.
It seems to me that with as much money as fans have to pay for tickets in current times, teams should do something to benefit the fans. If there has to be a doubleheader one day because of a rainout, etc, give the fans a Sunday doubleheader, or 5pm Twi night.
Thoughts on the whole "Day Night Doubleheader" thing..?
