I'm not a sports fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I have always been curious as to how people end up finding "their team" and sticking with it. Or even switching to another team for whatever reason.

The team I root for the most is Syracuse. I have lived here just about my whole life and graduated from there.

I think mostly people root for their local teams. Sometimes parents or friends can have influence on someone too.

For me:

I'm an Atlanta Braves fan. We got cable TV when we lived in CT in 1983. They were a decent team that year, and had Dale Murphy. After that, they went through that long losing period in the late 80s. From 1991 to 2005, during the Maddux-Glavine-Smoltz-Chipper years, they were a joy to watch. Who wouldn't want to be a Braves fan then? I wasn't one of the fans who jumped on the bandwagon when they got good. I suffered with them in the 80s.

It was also different, being a Braves fan, when I lived in NY, and PA.

My Family I guess lol.

They were all Redskins Fans, and I just followed them.

As I got more into other Sports, I eventually decided to Follow/Support The Wizards & Nationals

I don't follow The Capitals or DC United at all. Hockey & Soccer just don't interest me that much.

I was asked about this the other day, expect it was NASCAR. You find "your team" by the back stories. I got asked 1 day who was my favorite drive was and I didnt know many so I picked 1 I just heard about. 4 years he retired and I heard about another driver with potential but what really did it was his story matched mine; he grew up racing bikes in a trailer park without money and just did what others believed he could do.
Its about representing something you can relate to in a sport you love.

At age 5, living in the Bronx, I noticed baseball for the first time since my parents were watching it quite often on TV.
They were both Yankee fans. My older brother was a fan of the hated jints (a fault which he gave up a the age of 11, I'm glad to note).
I established my independence by choosing to root for the other team then playing in New York City, the Brooklyn Dodgers. This was in April of 1955.

Having been informed by my brother and my parents that the Dodgers had never won the World Series, I replied, "This year they will win it, because it's the first year that I'm rooting for them."

I was right. That confirmed me as a Dodger fan for life.

(See the banner in my sig. I took that photo myself in the Brooklyn Museum.)

I grew up in the UP of Michigan, and my dad was/is a die-hard Packers fan. Then we moved to
SC when I was a young teen, and down here it's all about college football. I didn't go to Clemson
or USC, so I refused to root for either team. When I moved to New England, I started getting into
football, and became a lifelong Patriots fan. I have since lived in Cincinnati and am now back in
Charleston, but the Pats are still my team.

You cant "change" your team!

You stick with them through good times & bad, rain or shine..

My team were local too me, I've followed them for 30 years now, I've moved away now, but you can't beat the thrill of match days!
