I am one very unhappy camper, Yesterday I was doing an electrical job for for a female friend of mines in the state of newyork. I was installing four bells on a four family house and was having trouble with one of the bells. I had to go up and down some wet stairs on the out side to the basement. I finally figured out that there was a internal break in the line on the last bell and i wanted to hurry up and get the job finished so i could meet up with some friends for drinks.....I picked up the pace a little and hurried down these three wet steps leading to the basment when i suddenly lost my footing and tried to reach out to a banister that was not there. I ended up trying to catch myself from hitting the pavement and twisted my ankle in the process. I could not walk on my left foot because the pain was very intense, I immediately starting holding on to the side of house with one foot in the air hopping to my car ,thats when i noticed that my ankel had swollen up twice its averge size and i drove myself to the emergency room where they took xrays and told me that i have a broken ankel and would not be able to work for two months 😱 At this point my brain was working in overtime wondering how in the hell am i going to pay my bills .I was given some pain medicine called naproxen and i still feel my ankle throbbing. Getting around on cruches is the hardest thing i ever had to do, if you feel my pain and been in a similiar situation before,by all means post your story and give me some advice on how to deal with this heartbreaking situation.

Well, all I can tell you is that it is extremely difficult to get up and down stairs on crutches. I accidentally fell and twisted my ankle and I had to use crutches. All I can say is take your time getting around on your crutches.

Oh man, can I sympathize! I was on crutches/cane for about a month because of a knee injury. You haven't really any idea of the meaning of "INCONVENIENT" until you try to get up off a toilet seat using only one leg, while keeping the other straight out. 🙁 Stairs are a big-time pain in the ass, and so is driving. Don't get me started on farm chores. Crutches take two hands to work with - you can't even carry a drinking glass worth a damn! 😡

Anyway, back when I was first injured I posted the following true tale of tickling... maybe it will cheer you up or inspire you to create your own embarassing (but worth it) memory.

true nurse tickle

My association with this you guys and this site must be impairing my judgement. Well, that plus a healthy dose of drugs. This happened to me two days ago:

I threw my knee out and had to go to the emergency room to see if they could put it back in. (No luck there, dammmit!) Anyway the doctor had the nurse shoot me up with some pain killer before he manipulated the joint. After playing around with my leg for awhile he left me and my wife with two nurses while he split to torment his next victim. The nurse who stabbed me in the butt with a needle starts to retake my blood pressure. By now I'm flying high as a kite. She put my left hand alongside the top of her hip to keep my arm stiff, so she could better manage the BP gadget.

I might have been high, but I could still feel textures. The nurse's uniform (a blouse and jacket) was soft and silky - it must have been rayon. I started running two finger tips very lightly in a small circle around her side. When her face split into a big grin I switched to lightly spider-tickling her ribs, right through her uniform. She got this big smile on her face, and then began giggling. I tickled her ribs the entire time she took my blood pressure. The whole thing lasted maybe 20 seconds. I'm not really sure how long, because I was really high.

Anyway, she's giggling, the other nurse is looking surprised, and my wife looks over at the one who's laughing and asked her if I was grabbing her ribs. She continued to giggle and nodded her head. All three of them looked at me and I said, "Hey it's her fault, she's the one who put my hand there!" In my state of mind (whacked out of my skull on demoral) this seemed like an excellent defense to me at the time. Now, in the cold light of day (sans drugs), I'm not so sure. In any case, I did enjoy spider-tickling her ribs, seeing her very pretty smile and hearing her cute giggle. Well, there it is. An opportunity seized.

I'll be chatting with you'all. After all, I've got nothing better to do until my knee is fixed.

Damn, that sucks man. I'm sorry to hear that. I can sympothize though. I broke my ankle playing football once. I was going down and took a bad step...my body continued to go foward while my ankle stayed behind. Turns out i not only broke it, but dislocated it as well. Fun. I was in a cast that went up my leg for 6 weeks and had to quickly learn how to use crutches. At first, they were a pain in the ass, but in just a few weeks, I was zooming around on them. It took me a little bit to recover from it and get my leg back into shape, but it got there eventually and it's good as new. Since you just broke it, you'll probably have a qucker recovery time than I had. Don't worry man, you'll be back to normal in no time at all.

Consider yourselves lucky to inhabit a miraculous machine that can recognize and repair mechanical insults/nebulous anomalys if given sufficient time.
And often without much outside help.

And then just keeps on ticking.

You get use to it after a few days...trust me on that. When I done my knee I found it difficult because of the pain but when that goes to a lower level it will become easier.

sorry about the accident Focus..and be careful walking around on crutches.my mom took a tumble down the stairs on hers once , with a broken knee

wow, sorry to hear about that focus! i too know how bad crutches can suck, ive always been pretty lucky, never broken a bone. but last year, while practicing a martial arts kick i had never been able to get down 100%, not only did i not execute the kick correctly, i came down at a very wrong angle on my left knee, felt something go "pop" and down i went. i never went to the ER and to this day i have no idea what damage i caused, but it took a full two weeks hobbling around on crutches before i could walk normally again. trying to take the dog out to do his thing was definitely challenging. all i can suggest is try to sit as much as possible and try to keep a few friends around to help you out with things. hope you have a speedy recovery.......

Focus,
I broke my foot 2 years ago in the wintertime. I had a bookcase fall on top of it. I had an awful time using my crutches at first because it seemed like it took forever to get anywhere that I wanted to go. I couldn't drive, grocery shop, or go anywhere really for 6 weeks.

Besides all the pain and misery, there is a specific memory of that time period that tortures me to this day. EVERY TIME I WANTED TO TAKE A SHOWER, I HAD TO COVER MY CAST WITH A WATERPROOF PROTECTOR I NICKNAMED THE BLUE BOOT. Focus, keeping my cast dry and getting in and out of the shower was the absolute worst part.

Good luck, sweetie. One more thing. After having your ankle positioned in the exact same way for 2 months, the pain you feel when the cast is removed will be signifigant when you stand on it for the first time and walk. Your joint will be stiff. Trust me.

Sorry to hear about that, Mike. That'll really slow you down a bit. I was on crutches for a while after hyperextending my knee trying to keep a patient from falling. It isn't fun. But, if there can be a good side to it, it's this... Breaks heal more quickly than soft tissue injuries like sprains and tears. So, if you had to hurt yourself, at least it was with the shortest recovery time. That probably doesn't make you feel much better, though. Hang in there!

Ann

thankyou for your advice and well wishes

I like to thank TicklishGrl4Lfe, sole seeker, Alchemy, Tk pervert, german, isabeau, Blue thunder, and Helena for sharing your advice, stories, and support. Im currently adapting slowly to the (new way of life) and finding out how difficult it is to even take a shower like Helena wrote about in her post, and i can also imagine how horrible it would have been if i had a cast on past my knee where i could not bend one leg like sole seeker explained about using the bathroom and getting on and off a toilet seat (thanks fo the nurse tickle story sole seeker)...Im about to to face a real challenge in a few hours and that is food shopping...omg! (here we go again)

Thank you ann, I did not know this until you spoke about it ,I actually do feel a lot better knowing that a break has a faster healing process than soft tissue injuriers or tears and sprains. Im still wearing the wooden feather you gave me at nest around my neck ,and everyone is asking me where did i get it from, and i tell them from a infamous designer *smile*

Hey Foc,

Wow..I'm sorry that happened to you. Luckily it's not permanent, and I'm sure you'll be up and walking in no time! I haven't ever broken a bone (quick, find some wood!), but I've seen my friends have a difficult time on crutches.

Get better soon!

Mike! So sorry to hear this. As far not working, I'm guessing disability is the way to go, if you have it.

Man this sucks.

Man i know how that is.After my ankel surgery i had to use crutches for about a week, and it blows, you cant do much of anything.I was living in a second story apartement, and that sure did not help.I hope you get off them soon, and can get a walking cast.

The cruches really do suck! ,The doctor said if i had broken both ankles, I could of gotten a cool wheel chair :ranty: (you had to be there to see my stone cold poker face)......thanks for the kind words tamia

IK70/Lynn - Im taking disability for two months and wil not be able to recieve that package from you until im back on my feet again working. Anyway, thankyou so much for being a friend .

bugmam - The hardest thing about using cruches is keeping my bad foot off the ground while im moving in step, The cast im wearing is kind of heavy to lift my leg up.......In two months i will be a crutch pro.... :disgust:

Sorry to hear about your fall there Focus. I feel your pain and hope it heals soon.

Considering I am world's biggest clutz, I've taken several falls and ended up on crutches on more than one occasion (I have a pair in my car and in my apt just in case).

First time was during a basketball game and I took a dive for a ball and ended up spraining my ankle. Second time was during a soccer game and I went in for a slide tackle and 2 people landed on my knee and dislocated it...again. 3rd was during a formation running and I apparently stepped wrong (stupid shoes) and sprained my ankle bad enough to get a lovely air cast so I could continue my training - same ankle 2 wks later I snapped it coming off of a 6 ft block wall (a few people heard that snap) - right after I finished 3 months of rehad, I sprained the same one again (CRAP!) - after the last time, I figured out it was the shoes and threw them away. 4th time I had two 150lb dogs run into my leg in different directions and dislocated my knee. 5th time I had my hands full of cat crates and opened the door over my foot (I was supposed to catch the door after it opened, not before DUH) and broke 3 of my toes.

I remain the accident prone champion of the world. Rest and heal soon. Listen to your dr and make sure you are taking care of that swelling. Get well soon!!!

You made me cringe with the stories of breaks and bruises,....you have given the title 'accident prone' a new name...WOW!!! Anyway, thanks for the well wishes .

Awww Mike, I'm so sorry to hear you broke your ankle. I hope you are able to get around or at least have some friends close by to help you. I've never broken any bones (knock on wood) so I have no advice but just take it easy.

If i get that walking cast you talked about in a month, i should be able to have a little more closure on things....(got my fingers crossed)

Sandee - thanks sandee, im recovering mentally first and then move on from there, I will call you later and give you details...thanks for the support and congrats on you weekend tickle session

Hey Mike,

All I can say is damn, Damn, DAMN!!!! That sucks to one of the higher degrees of suckstivity. I have been there, with a fractured ankle (I've fractured both ankles and had more sprains than I care to think about), and out of work for 3 months. It IS waaaay better with a clean break though, part of my Fred Sanford walk is due to my ankle maladies (never a break!!).

The best advice I can give is to do what the doctor says, stay off of it, elevate, keep dry, etc. And stay positive. Your mental outlook can have as much effect on the healing process as anything. Take it slow with the crutches, you'll find a rhythm with it. I don't think anyone's mentioned it, but I'd be remiss if I didn't tell you ummm... your armpits are going to hurt like hell after a while, so make sure the crutches are adjusted so as to have as little weight on the shoulder area as possible. You'll probably choose the lesser of two evils over the weeks (sore armpits vs sore hip of the good leg).

God I feel for you though. You may be a quick healer too, and possibly be back faster than the prognosis. When I had my fracture, after 3 weeks, I was able go get a air cast and get medically cleared to go back to work. Aside from disability, maybe you got something you can sell on E-Bay or something?

Get well soon bro!
