How long have the terms "lee" and "ler" been around for?

Max may have coined the words, but I suspect it was longer ago (quite a bit longer, I think) than a decade or so. I remember using "lee" at least 15 to 20 years ago...

I first saw the words, when I came to TMF, it's al little over ten years ago. But when they were coined, I don't know.

Max Speer definitely was the one who coined "lee" and "ler". You'll have to ask him when it was, but it was definitely over 10 years ago. He was using those words in the newsgroup days of the internet when there were no graphics.

I told him that it was a natural development in our community. Anything that is really important gets abbreviated down to one syllable. In the late 19th century people spoke of an "automobile carriage," a strange vehicle that moved itself without a horse. When they became important enough it got down to one syllable, car.

As a person with another mother tongue than English (Danish, to be precise), I have often thought of translating the terms into my own lang. Some of them are easy, others are not, and the lee and ler is not really easy to translate. There could be other langs, where it is easier.

I love Max's terms and his story writing. He's been my hero for a while now. Also, X-mas pisses me off. Christmas is my favorite holiday, and I hate it when people abbreviate it.
