I have a 15 year old cocker spaniel dog,
who I`ve had since she was six weeks old and is like one of the family. The last few months have been rather hard on the old girl, and I can see the clock is starting to wind down on a long and happy life. She can no longer go down steps, and chasing squirrels and rabbits simply don`t appeal to her anymore and she is nearly deaf. But she still loves to be outside with me when I do yardwork, and always stays nearby. For those of you who have had a dog this many years... well you learn to enjoy each and every precious day.
This morning after finishing mowing the lawn, I washed off the mower and put it in the garage. Afterwords I decided to park my pickup truck in the garage, as well. I started the truck and like I always do, looked over to make sure the dog wasn`t near and slowly backed in. All of a sudden I heard a high pitched squeal, and right away I knew what had happened......I hit my own dog with the truck!! I was quick enough with my wits to imediately stop, and quickly move forward a few feet. My heart was pounding as I got out of the truck to check on her. I didn`t run over her, but her back side took a blow from the rear tire. She had a difficult time walking, and didn`t want to be handled. Thankfully no broken bones, but I was worried the blow may have caused some internal bleeding or damaged her spine. Since it was a Sunday I was limited to what options I had, so I called my oldest daughter and she found an animal hospital that was open seven days a week. I wrapped the dog up in a blanket, and took her to their emergency room. The x-rays were good....just a tiny bit of internal bleeding, and a bruised back side. The vet gave her a cortisone shot, an antibiotic shot and some pills for pain and to help her sleep.
I have no one to blame but myself for a moment of stupidity. Thankfully she`s going to be ok. The vet expects a full recovery, and said she`s got the heart of a much younger dog and didn`t feel any cancer tumors, which is so common with older dogs. She`s a tough little stinker. She survived an attack from a coyote several years ago, and now a Ford Ranger. Long may she run.🙂
