Hi all,
I wanted to share this with my friends. I am so happy.

Today, I worked half a day as a substitute English teacher at
Guilderland High School. I think the kids were 15 and 16. They are
reading a screenplay called "Monster", about a 16 year old boy who
is involved in a robbery where the shopkeeper gets killed.

The scene we were reading today was the first day of the trial, so
in order to keep it intersting, I assigned parts and we acted it
out. When we were finished reading it, I started a discussion with
them about the fact that the kid, who did not actually kill the
shopkeeper, was being tried as an adult and the prosecuter was
asking for the death penalty. I wanted to see how the students would
react to that. It was a great discussion.

On my way out, I heard one of the girls tell a friend, "I just had
the funnest time in English class."

Jen, flying high at the moment.

Congrats...

Enjoy the feeling Ms. Jen. My father was a teacher for nearly 30 years, and he said it was amazing...when it went well. Hope you have many more good days in the profession! Q

Thanks Q. I hope they call me often.

To make matters better, I just got my first paycheck from the school district.

Life is good.

whatever happened to the commercial you were in? Or did it not air in my part of the country?

Lime,
As far as I know it never aired, period. I never even got the video tape they had promised. 😡

Jen I was supposed to be in a commercial too, and they never aired it either. Show biz sucks lol!

I'm happy for ya Jenn🙂 I remember my very first day at behavioral consulting...It was to be my first solo consultation...I was to provide an initial observation and a follow up training /consultation for the family of the child in need as well as the group of therapists that would be working with him...I had just finished the really dry historical "This is what Applied Behavioral Analysis is" intro I would soon learn I would begin every training with....

I told everyone to break for lunch and we would resume in half an hour during which time I will begin asking for volunteers to be trained one by one doing the one to one therapy .

One of the therapists (a woman in her mid to late thirties) had a verry squeaky voice and tip toed over to me , looked at me with the most intense eye contact imaginable and asked "Excuse me, will the one by ones be one at a time or all at once?" Another therapist in training heard her and spit his grape juice because he laughed so hard and it projectile-like travelled across the room and caught the mom of the child smack in the face as she turned just at that moment...she screamed, her husband laughed, she hit him, everyone was roaring in laughter or oooh'ing and aaahh'ing, the little boy (who was thought to be severely autistic) was the calmest one of them all...he very calmly grabbed a paper towel and wiped his moms face, then he went over to the guy who accidentally gave his mom a grape bath and proceded to stomp on his foot. I watched this entire thing in semi-shocked horror and the second it was over I said "well, it's clear to me that "tommy" has a decent grasp on cause and effect, or at least the benefits of revenge...lol" I immediately regretted it but the parents did chuckle...lol. It was a really weird first day....lol...I cried all the way home because I was convinced (in my paranoid first day on the job way...lol) that I would somehow be blamed and be fired so bad the next day...lol...I wasn't🙂 Anyway, glad you did not witness projectile vomitting and had a great first day...lol🙂 Good luck to u🙂

sounds like good times Jen, hope it keeps rolling...

Way to go

I think that is great that you connected with the students so well. I know from my high school days that it takes ALOT of courage to be a substitute teacher to begin with. Some of the kids in my class were ruthless when there was a sub, and looking back on it, felt really bad about for them. For you to do it and succeed the way you did is teriffic. Hope it keeps working for you.

Good Luck

Congratulations Jen!

Say, I have an idea... Next time you're working in literature why not work on The Scarlet Letter? Instead of Hester wearing the letter "A" on her clothes, lock her barefoot in the village stocks and have the entire class tickle her feet. The best part - you be Hester!
Now that would be an English class to remember!

Thanks everyone. My first day as a substitute was a few weeks ago at the middle school. I was SOOOO bored. I figured if I was bored, the kids must be as well. Kids act out when bored.

That is why I chose to take the teacher's plan and ad my own flair to it. I guess it worked.

Thanks again for all the responses.

sole seker, I am glad I can help keep you fantasy life so rich. LOL

Jen:

Two things....

1) Regarding teaching - WAY F*****G COOL!!!!!!!!! Having taught, myself, I can testify that there is nothing like the feeling you get when you make "The Connection (a little light goes off in their heads)." 😀 😀 😀

2) Regarding commercials - I did beds, "doughnuts" and themes for a fair number of commercials and TV shows, only ONE of which ever actually aired (I know how you feel). 😡 🙁

Jen,
I'm very happy for you. I'm sure they'll look forward to seeing you again. Keep up the good work.
