It actually happened about 2 weeks ago. I've been offline for the passed month due to a broken monitor, a friend found a new one for me at a garage sale. Well anyway July 8th (two Thursdays ago) Al was playing over at the Westbury Music Fair (a relatively popular concert hall out here on Long Island) and my friends Mike, Liz, Fuzzy and myself were in attendance. We show up as normal, get in, I picked up a shirt beforehand and the show started.
The opening act sucked, this hack comedian....I mean I know since it is Weird Al and their are kids in the audience he had to be g-rated but still he just plain old sucked. Well after 15 minutes of this they hold a 20 minute intermission! Me and Liz both look at each other (only two that smoke) and simultaneously said "wanna cigarette?" We get outside, are talking for a few minutes when this woman walks up to us, she says shes with her kids and trying to get away for a bit, she wanted to bum a cigarette. I gave her one and we started talking. Eventually we got on the topic of Weird Al and she goes "Oh yeah, hes the nicest guy, I put together his last album."....................we just froze. Then she added "Hey, you guys want to meet him?" We flipped the f*ck out! So then she reaches into her purse and pulls out 4 backstage passes for us and our friends.
The true irony is, is that Mike and Fuzzy are the REAL hardcore AL fans....we got back to them, said nothing, just showed them the passes and they near about shit their pants. I was really glad I bought a shirt before the show and that I hadnt decided on a black one. The show rocked, hes a great stage performer let me tell you, even if you're not into his music. Afterwords we wandered towards the gate we were directed to, stood around for about 10 minutes seeing other members of the band, roadees and other assorted grunts walking about. Then Al came in....hes a lot taller than you think...over 6 feet at least. I shook his hand, said what a big fan I was (cursing myself for not bringing a camera) and I actually got the ENTIRE band to sign the shirt I got, including their original drummer Bermuda Shwartz who, until that show, had not appeared in the tour due to health problems. And she was right, Al really is a nice guy...
And I know, a lot of the "real" music fans in the house are like "yeah....thats kinda cool...I guess..." but keep in mind just meeting a celebrity in general is always cool, regardless of stature or social niche. And I know every last one of ya can remember at least one catchy AL song....LOL 😀
