I need help!

I'm having problems running programs like Winamp, Windows Media Player, games console emulators, etc. Basically, certain media programs (though RealOne works perfectly) on my computer don't appear when I click on them, even though my computer thinks they're still running. This is particularly frustrating as I use Media Player to play most of my clips.

I've recently defragmented my hard drive as a way to get them working again, but that didn't work, so I was wondering if anyone can help me out. It's really annoying. I use Windows 98, by the way.

If several apps are failing, the problem is somewhere in Windows, not in the apps.
I would pick a failing app for which you still have the installation media (or can download a fresh version), uninstall the failing app and do a reinstall, then a system boot. This will refresh the registry, directories, etc. for that app.

If that works, do it for all the failing apps. Good luck.

I would at least switch over to '98 SE, if you haven't already. In any case it would do you good to install a more current version of Windows.

Original MS 98 is just horrible...

Not too long ago I installed Norton Anti Virus. It recorded a troll trying to backdoor me from this site, and a few days later found a Backdoor Autoupder Virus attached to two application programs. I had to delete the applications to dump this particular virus, so presumably some of my applications won't work. (I have not found out which ones as yet.) Could this be part of your problem? I'm not computer-literate enough to know. 😕
