Playing a Video Compact Disc (VCD)

A Video Compact Disc (VCD) holds more than a compact disc, but less than a DVD. The video stored on a VCD is of a lower quality than video on a DVD, and similar to the quality of video on a VHS videotape. Because VCD video is encoded in MPEG-1 format, you can't use DVD Player in Mac OS X version 10.3 to play a VCD. Instead, use QuickTime Player to view the contents of a VCD.

1. Insert a VCD in the optical drive of your computer.
2. Open QuickTime Player, located in the Applications folder.
3. Choose File > "Open Movie in New Player."
4. Navigate to the VCD.
5. Open the MPEGAV folder.
6. Open the file that ends with ".DAT."
7. When the movie opens in a new QuickTime Player window, click the Play button to play the movie.

To play Super Video Compact Discs (SVCD), you must use third-party software such as Video LAN Client. You can find information about this software at www.videolan.org.
