One more Giant in American Literature passes; author Shelby Foote was a Veteran of WWII, & an Author of Coutless Books & Articles. He may be best known for his Filmed Narratives in Ken Burns' PBS The Civil War.

He was a Courtly Southern Gentleman, a Fine Writer & a Magnificent Story Teller.

He was a Friend of Mine that I never got to meet personaly & I shall miss his influence on American History & Literature very much.

Oh that picture of you, Lightening Bug, with the neon style lit teeth makes me giggle, even in this eulogy thread.

Yes, Shelby Foote will be missed. Not many courtly old Southern gentlemen left, let alone Southern gentlemen writers. 🙁

What a nice way to describe him, Lightninbug. :triangle:

I think of him when I'm in the mood for something to read with a southern flavor; for me he's right up there with Carson McCullers, Truman Capote, Flannery O'Connor, and Harper Lee. His articles and essays, too, sweep you into the historic south.

Yet he never let false romanticism blur his vision. He was a man way ahead of his time; so much so that he wasn't really understood or appreciated by the public until Ken Burns recruited him for the Civil War narrative. (good for Ken!)

I'm pleased to see that more people are reading him than ever before. Thanks for bringing him up here, Lightnin. :twohugs:

Thanx Ladies;

Blondi & Rose, Thank you for the posts. I esp. like Rosie's comment about his being able to give you the unvarnished truth about the historic south & not just the Scarlett O'Hara parts.
Thanx S.F. You were an American Storyteller.

He was one of my all time favorite authors. He wrote some of the best civil war books that I have ever read. His writing made you feel as if you were living in the story. May god bless him…
