I was in a bad car accident on 6/20/08

I was in a bad car accident when I got on 476 South and I was in the right hand lane. I noticed that another car was trying to merge into traffic and I slowed down to let them merge into traffic. When I did that, I got hit very hard in the rear and my whole back door was busted in and my back window was gone. I was very upset about this :rant:. We both pulled over on the side of the road and he asked me if I was okay and told him I was and asked him the same thing and he was fine. He was in a HUGE TRUCK. It was a Peterbuilt and he called the police and when the cop came he took my information and his information. Called my Dad and told him what happened and he said that he would call my Mom and tell her where I was.

She came to the scene of the accident and took pictures of my car and the truck plus the guy's license plate. Took some pictures with my cell phone of the truck and his license plate. My car has been at the body shop for about three weeks now. Called today to ask when approximately it'll be ready and he said it might not be until the end of this month. My car is a Toyota RAV4 and it's a 2004. The guy got a citation from the policeman because it was his fault. I am currently driving a rental car from Enterprise that's a Toyota RAV4 that's a 2008. So far, I am doing fine and don't seem to have any injuries which I think is amazing 😀.

Just wanted to share this on the forum. Thank you for who ever reads my story.

Hey there, Jen. I'd been wondering where you were hiding, though I'm terribly sorry it was due to an accident such as that. That truck driver sounds extremely irresponsible. Driving something of that size requires you to pay attention to the road, and sounds like he wasn't. He also must have been following way too close to hit you like that if you had just slowed down to let someone else over. If you have any medical bills, it is my hope that the company he works for covers them for you.

Aside from that, I hope your recovery is going well. I've been hit from behind before, though it was a small 4-door sedan that hit me. I had mild whiplash from that. I can't imagine how you must have felt afterwards. I send you many warm wishes, dear. You've always been such a sweet, delightful person. May you recover fully in no time at all.

WOW scary you could have been hurt worse. Glad to hear you are ok and seem to be doing fine. That must suck seems like it is talking a long time to get you car fixed though. later kyle
 
glad you ok chick 🙂 ive had a few lucky accidents too, its scary isnt it 🙂 if your feeling naughty, moan about back and shoulder pains and you can get a ridiculas amount of money for claiming whiplash 😉
 
I'm so sorry to hear about your accident, Jen. Thank heaven you weren't seriously hurt. The guy who hit you sounds like he was careless. The most important thing is that you're okay. I hope your regular car gets back to you ASAP.

I just want to add that after we pulled over and he asked me if I was okay and I was, he actually accused me of stopping. Told him that I didn't stop I was just slowing down to let another car merge into traffic. He thought it was my fault at first but he found out it was his when he got the citation from the cop.

Hope the guy learned his lesson about following too closely to other vehicles at least especially when he's driving a HUGE truck like a Peterbuilt.
 
Jen, even if you had stopped, the guy needs to be a certain distance away from the back of your car in case he needs to make a sudden stop. Not that I think you would stop on a busy highway. That's just common sense. The guy was being careless and tried to pass the blame. He was likely trying to get out of trouble.

Sounds like a careless driver, glad nobody was seriously injured.

its near impossible to win a claim if you hit someone from behind, even if you were on a hill and you rolled back into him, he`d still have had a hard time trying to win the claim if you denied it. so as you were both moving, he`d never had got anywhere, people just like to point fingers 😛
 
Jen, I'm so glad to hear that you are ok. That's certainly the only thing that really matters in a situation like this.

Is your car being repaired or was it a total loss?

car accidents like that are horrible. so glad to hear you are alright. thanks for letting us know you're not hurt.
 
Did your insurance pay for the rental, or did you have to?

I don't know how the auto insurance situation works in the states.

Well to make a long story short, my car was taken to a body shop where the intention was to fix it. However after about a month a representative from the guy's insurance company came to see the damage to my car and declared it a total loss. So it was totaled which I am sure wasn't an easy decision since according to my Dad, it costs more for an insurance company to declare a total loss on a car than to fix it. I've noticed a few people asked if I paid for my rental car from Enterprise or did his insurance company pay. Well of course since it was his fault, Travelers Insurance company paid for my rental car.

I did get a new car which is very nice and it's a 2008 Toyota RAV4 and it's the same color as my old car. I am thanking my lucky stars that I am okay :veryhappy. The accident could've been much worse. He could've hit me from the side or he could've been going faster. Thanks for everyone's concern so far.
