"George Rich, 43, faked own burglary. According to a police report, he made him and his fiancee’s home look like it had been broken in. On the police report he claimed that among the many things stolen was a gold diamond engagement ring. When the weekly update on local pawnshop activity came out, detectives noticed his name on the list. Items he pawned: a gold chain and two gold rings, one of which was an engagement ring. He later admited to the detectives that he faked the burglary."

What gets me about it is the ring couldn't have been worth that much more to a pawnshop dealer, and he probably would have only paid him a quarter of the ring's actual value, provided it was worth a large ammount to begin with. To fake your own robbery just to pawn a ring and only get a PERCENTAGE of it's value back in cash is really stupid. He was better off just selling it to a dealer in the business and getting more for it if he wanted money that badly.

Ever heard of insurance fraud? The point was to get reimburced by an insurance company and come out with profit. That way, even if he got 25% of the value for the items from the pawnshop, he'd still come out with - 125%. So, it's not really that stupid. You just have to pull it off right. Peh, what an amatuer. He'd have been better pawning it somewhere a couple miles from town, specifically in a dumpier town. The pawn shop in my neighborhood doesn't put your name on a list, providing you're willing to shave off a portion of what is offered. I've made plenty of cheap cash from that pawn shop!

If you are going to cheat then you have to be willing to pay the penalty if you get caught at it. All this guy would have had to do was sell the ring outright rather than do what he did.

I thought about insurance fraud at first but it didn't make sense to me. Why not just hide the jewelry and collect the insurance money...then you have the money plus the items. If he really wanted to sell the items AND get insurance money he would have been better off selling them ANYPLACE other than thr pawn shop. One for more money and two so it wouldnt be tracked.
Sooo assuming it's NOT insurance fraud WHY did he call the police at all? Why report it as a burglary if you wreent after insurance money?
So there's not motive other than the insurance...which brings me back to my first point.
It's a paradox to be certain. To get out of this circle you just have to say the man's an idiot and didn't know what he was doing. And I'll go along with that idea. Stupid criminals are nothing new...

Like the guy who robbed the convenience store but was thwarted when the kid at the register told him he couldn't open the drawer unless he was making a sale...

the Hollywood brother wonders if it was stupidity. The hollywood Brother also wonders if it was a scam ro was he hidingthering from his girlfriend? The hollywood brother is not suprised either because this bozo the clown wannabe is just plain stupid and deerves whatever he gets from law enforcement

You think THAT'S stupid?! Listen to this:
"What a shoot! Splitted the air to oxygen and hydrogen!"
Unnamed reporter during a football game

Don't expect a whole lot. Federal crimes like this land ya in a nice, comfy minimum-security-non-anal prison.
