It was around this time of year in 1996 that the Tickle Me Elmo plush toy was the hottest toy around. People were buying them for 10x to 20x the retail price.
One radio station had a Tickle Me Elmo to give away that winter. I believe people called in to get a chance at it, and the two DJs at the station (one male, one female) made a phone call to a woman named Terri who worked in I believe the bakery department of a grocery store. She would win the toy, but there was a catch. She had to allow herself to be tickled.
The female DJ asked Terri where she was most ticklish. Terri first said her thighs, then changed it to her toes. I don’t remember how long the DJs said she had to take the tickling; it sounded like around 30 seconds while she was on the phone and on the air. After the challenge was set up, you could hear in the background a woman’s voice say over the store paging system “Will all the men in the store please come to the bakery?” Both the DJs cracked up at that.
After confirming she was barefoot, the DJs told Terri to scream “tickle my feet!” to start the challenge. Terri yelled “tickle my feeeeee-aaaaah hahaha!” and then the listeners were treated to Terri’s wonderful non-stop laughter. The DJs were cracking up along with her. When it was over, they asked a breathless Terri how many people were tickling her. I don’t remember her exact answer but it was like 12 or something.
Someone recorded all of this and the sound clip was floating around the internet and the old newsgroups at the time. Probably one of my all-time favorite mainstream audio clips.
One final note - one guy on one of the old tickling sites or the newsgroups (can’t remember which) lived near that grocery store and said he popped in surreptitiously because he had to see what Terri looked like. He confirmed that she was very attractive and that was the cherry on top for all of us.
Anyways, someone mentioned the Elmo craze back in ‘96 at Christmas yesterday and it reminded me of this and I had completely forgotten about it until now.
