Bell somehow crossed our land line with another family's land line as a result they got our internet connection with their own. 2 weeks ago Thursday afternoon my internet connection slowly died until we couldn't connect to Sympatico at all. We would get get an error message when we tried to connect. The phone lines got fixed the Saturday after Canada Day (July 1st) We talked to 3 sympatico help technicians and 2 other different technicians. I spent approximately 2 hours on the phone with 2 technicians on the Thursday and the Friday. They couldn't fix the problem
from their end. 1 technician said we needed a new network card or a new 10X wire. The other said our modem wasn't communicating with our computer. A 3rd technician said Windows XP Service Pack 2 was the problem. So I uninstalled it... A Big Problem. We got memory errors everytime we closed an application and we got "have to reboot" errors to then our computer would start a 30 second countdown then reboot. After it rebooted it was horribly slow to do anything ie respond to clicked shortcut icons or any function. When the phone lines got fixed, we could fully connect using Sympatico, but we got a "Couldn't find webpage" on IE and Firefox windows. We tried copying my Mom's sp2.cab file from my Mom's computer at her work. Service Pack 2 was more then that I archived compressed folder.
It finally came to me... try computer restore. I did and VOILA. It restored our
internet connection and Service Pack 2.
If you have a gut feeling and you know somethings about computers or if you don't, don't ignore it. Call the help technicians 1st. If they can't fix it, before
spending alot of money on computer parts or having it fixed professionally. It doesn't hurt if you have all important files saved on Hard Drive or CD/disk to use system restore. It worked for me. I was 90% sure Service Pack 2 wasn't the problem. I was right.
