Wikipedia is not Veritaserum sadly and is wrong on this occasion. There is nothing stopping me from logging into it and stating under the entry for "The Moon", that it is made of green cheese. Granted it would be picked up and corrected eventually, but Wikipedia is not infallible because it's built by voluntter contributors and submissions are not screened before they're posted.

Rowling herself has stated - I accept it was never mentioned in any of the seven books - that James was a man of leisure who didn't have or need a job because of the amount of family money he had. He was, essentially, the wizarding world's equivalent of a gentleman of leisure.
