how many of you find your local radio seriously lacking? I for one, have turned to the Internet for MY radio listening. The only drawback about it is...you can't take it with you in your car (yes I know about XM and Sirius, but can't afford that at this time...but when I can it will definitely be XM).

Here are links to just some of my fav's...if you have a fave...post a link in a reply!

www.hardradio.com (my absolute fav)
www.snakenetmetalradio.com
www.thrashnbash.com
www.extremeradio.co.uk
www.totalrock.com (may be going off the air soon)

"No its not a copnflict of interest that I own all the local radio stations" Yea, dude, it is, cuz all our local radio stations SUCK

Speaking as a radio jock, I have felt the crush of 'corporate' management. Too many cooks in the kitchen, the same songs over and over, etc., DOES drive you nuts. How can I stand hearing the same stuff over and over during my five hour shift? I turn the studio volume down, and pop in one of my favorite cds in the player. Trust me, many of us in the biz feel the same way as you.
And don't get too attached to radio stations broadcasting on the internet. The music industry has decided that they not only want royalties from songs played on the air, but also from songs played on radio station websites.
The overall opinion from some of my friends is that XM and Sirius ARE worth the coin. While they last, that is. You can't come up with a great idea like that without attracting the sharks of the corporate world.

I use internet radio mostly at work, because reception there sucks! Right now I'm liking launch@yahoo. You can "create" your own stations, with the types of music, and artists you listen to.

Sean...can I take a wild guess here...CLEARCHANNEL?? *or should I not say that too loudly?*

bollocks to corp Amerika!

I've heard XM radio, it's really awesome in that there are so many different styles of music to choose from.
We have a wonderful cooporate radio station here in New Haven, you can hear "The Joker" by Steve Miller or "Hotel California" by The Eagles at least 63,429 times in a single afternoon!

It's what you DON'T hear on commercial radio that turned me to Internet radio! I have discovered so much about the European Rock and Metal scene through the Internet, especially the Scandinavian bands...(I like to call it Viking Rock...lol..!!)

My latest discovery is a band called Beautiful Creatures . I was turned on to them a month or so ago, and just found a Japanese import of their self-titled debut CD (2001) yesterday at the 2nd hand shoppe. Let me tell ya fellow rocker's...you have got to get this CD!! If not THE best, it is right up there among the top of the list, of the greatest CD's I have ever heard...and I'm pretty selective.

I could not stop listening to it...even at the pub last night, I brought my Walkman in with me listening to it (good thing I've been a regular customer there for 4 years or so!). Peep's thought I had gone daft, until I gave them a listen to the earphones...and most of the crowd there are a VERY hard sell musically. Almost to the person, they asked who it was, and commented on how great it was.

I don't know where they are from yet, but I don't think they are from America. A second CD is due out soon.

For those who want to know more, their website addy is: www.beautifulcreatures.net , and you will need the Shockwave player to view the site.

I saw their CD for around $10.00 at www.bn.com (Barnes & Noble).

ROCK ON...!!

OK.....ya got me interested in checking things out. I did a search on internet radio and came up with several that were of interest (to me at least), Of those I've gotten to check out, this is my fav so far... http://www.accuradio.com/ I'm listening to the broadway channel on there now. There are commercials. But, it's well worth it to get some great music!

Yes, Ann...and check out what's available in your media player's radio station as well

Not Clear Channel. Liggett Communications, which used to own most of the stations in Mid-Michigan. The owner sold those and, because he wanted to return to small-town radio roots, bought all five stations here in town.
Two stations are now fully automated with no live people on it. 60 percent of our staff has been let go. They upped the price of advertising, and all the businesses in town said "No thanks". We don't get raises, no bonuses during the holidays, but the general manager still has the bucks to take his 35 foot cabin cruiser on week long cruises all summer...not to mention his annual ski trips to Colorado.
We see our owner once a year...the rest of the time he's at his mansion...in Grosse Pt.
Why do i stay? Because like the best jocks, I love this job. I could care less about the type of music I play....I just like to go on the air and entertain people. I tell kids wanting to get into the business that it's like M*A*S*H. The most fun in the worst possible conditions.

I understand all of that...I'm in same situation, although an entirely different occupation.

quote from you:
Why do i stay? Because like the best jocks, I love this job.

I have an Internet DJ friend that feels exactly the same about it! ...and also does not get paid...AT ALL!!

Like I've always said....money is great, but being happy in your job is most important.
