Yes, I know it's only seventeen games into the season, but, with the 0-17 New Jersey Nets playing as they are, and the 3-14 Knicks not far behind, I believe it is appropriate to pose this question.
As most basketball fans know, the all time worst season record is held by the 9-73 1972/73 Philadelphia 76ers. So far, the closest to that record which I can recall in modern times was the 11-71 Dallas Mavericks in 1993, I believe.
Right now, the Knicks are playing .176 basketball, in spite of their current five game losing streak. At that pace, the Knicks would finish about 14-68, so the record should be safe. It will be interesting to see if the Knicks would get to seventy losses, though.
The Nets... 0-17. They have to go 10-55 the rest of the season to avoid the record. I would say that they way they are playing, it is questionable if they can do so.
So, what's the consensus: Will the all time NBA record for most losses in a season be broken this year, or are the 1973 Sixers still in a "class" by themselves?
