Let's say you're writing a book, would you put a tickling scene in there somewhere? I want to, but I'm afraid the publisher would be like, "I love the book! We would publish it....if only it didn't have that damn scene where the person gets tickled." It would fit in with the theme (which I've kept secret for about a year, TYVM), but I want to know what other people would think first.

If it fits in with the theme, it should be just fine. If you take a look at the things that get into mainstream, the so called fetishes, there are plenty. If you look at movies, there are a number that have tickling scenes, maybe brief, but included. I don't know that I can recall any in books, but I'm sure there must be.

Besides, if it is inappropriate to the book in the eyes of the publisher, they can just ask you to pull that story and you can write the book without it and publish that story on this website.

tickledorange, I posted this in another thread but wanted to post here just incase you missed it. I found it while searching amazon.com. it’s completely mainstream and one HOT tickling scene (in my opinion, anyhow)! so, I think that so long as it fits... it will fly. I'll bet that this publisher thought of it as nothing more than a cute/different little twist.

are you writing a book? what’s it about? can we get little sneak-peeks?

click here for the passage I am talking about

Yeah, I thought about that. That might be easier.

I'm not telling people what it's about yet, trying to protect the ideas. When I get farther than a few 1,000 words, maybe when it's (not)published, I might post a few sentences.

id buy it! i like the stories youve posted so far Stacy, just keep up the good work, you do a great job!

Tickling in Mainstream Literature

When I was a kid I read a first edition of one of the Hardy boy mysteries called The Great Airport Mystery by Franklin W. Dixon. This was a book for grade school kids about high school kids. One scene was a high school picnic (sort of a senior class party) during which one of the lasses tickled her brother which exposed his weakness to the rest of the class which precipitated a gang tickling. Now that publication was from a simpler time in the United States, I think first written in the 1930's.

I bought a modern edition for my own kids in the early 1990's. Alas, that scene had been "blue penciled." For all I know that was a response to a more complex world, or perhaps tickling simply made the modern publisher uncomfortable.

Still, one of my favorite fiction authors who wrote truly epic stories was the late Leon Uris. He had short but very tasteful references to adult (for the most part) tickling in at least 3 books: Trinity, Mila 18 and (one of my all time favorite books of fiction) Armageddon. There may have been others, but these jump to mind.

In Gone With The Wind Margaret Mitchell had Scarlett Butler get tickled to death by Rhett Butler in a river boat state room in a tiny little snippet that I reread more than once.

Now I wouldn't read any of these books just for the tickling unless you like being disappointed, but they did point out that even some of the great books can reference the subject. (I would read the books as great, inspirational and uplifting except for Mila 18 which was quite depressing but educational for a fictional account of a real event.)

I just wanted to know if there were any scenes in mainstream published books. Besides, it would be a lot more fun than a few of the ideas I was thinking of.

See, I think to us tickling scenes stand out like a sore thumb. But it's a normal social activity, with no more implication than flirting or play-fightint to vanillas, so I doubt any publisher, editor, director or critic would give it a second thought. We're hyper-sensitive to those things, but I've included tickling scenes in stories I've written and the only people who commented were those who know of my fetish

See, and that's what I was wondering. I didn't want anyone to hate my book cause I put a tickling scene in it.

I read an R.L. Stine book that had multiple endings. Ya know...you read a few pages then it says "if you want to fight the monster turn to page 48. If you want to escape through the secret door, turn to page 116." and one of the endings had a girl remove her shoes and socks and get thrust into a room where she was waist deep in feathers. He locked her in and suddenly a wall opened and 40 monkeys were let into the room. They held her down and tickled her to death with the feathers. LOL Needless to say I memorized the exact pattern and page # to get that ending. LOL!!! But to answer your question, yes it's perfectly acceptable in mainstream literature. 🙂

I read a lot and have seen many tickle mentions in the books I've read. None are romance novels either (I can't stomache that stuff.). Most of what I read are suspense and/or mystery. None of the mentions are taken beyond a sentence or two. But, it's definitely out there...and more than something brushing against the skin creating a tickling sensation too. I'd go for it if it fits with your story. I just wouldn't take it further than what fits.

Ann

Why wouldn't it be okay? It's a normal thing.

I once wrote a play that had a nice little tickling moment in it and no one ever singled that out. It was never mentioned because TICKLING IS NORMAL!!! Hello out there! Not just the poster but ALL OF YOU! There is nothing wrong with tickling. You are not weird for liking it and it is an absolutely normal part of Life!

Sorry but I get so flistered when people put so much weight on something that is seriously NO BIG DEAL. It's just tickling.

Again, no insult directed to the poster of this thread. I just get dumbfounded when people want to make tickling into something more than it is.

Thanks for letting me sound off.

OOOOO I remember that book - "The Wierd Experiments of Dr. Eeek."

But anyway, I was going to do it anyway, I just didn't want to take it too far or anything like that.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet ( I didn't feel like reading through the whole thread before replying. lol), but there's been tickling or mention of tickling in the Spider-Man comic books , and novels.

In the book, "Spider-Man: The Venom Factor" , Peter gets his spider-sense temporarily disabled by the Hobgoblin's razor-winged bats (they were coated with some chemical that was invented by the original Green Goblin, I believe).

After he trips in the bathroom , and Mary Jane teases him about it, he says "You like seeing me fall on my face! That's it-- when I get back, I'm going to tickle you 'till you can't breathe!"

There were two Spider-Man comic book issues that I remember tickling in...

in one, he explains all of his powers to MJ (after she tries a failed attempt to playfully attack him with a pillow when he gets done with the bathroom during the night..yes, his Spider-sense even warns him of attacks that really wouldn't hurt him at all), and in the last few panels, she says something like "Well, all those powers are nice and all..but there's one thing they can't save you from...THE TERRIBLE TICKLE MONSTER!" while going for his ribs....while his Spider-Sense goes off again from the "attack" (except that time, he doesn't suddenly flip over her head to avoid it)

in the other one...I believe it's been shown on the forums, before...MJ's complaining about being bored (or was it that they never do anything exciting?) and Pete uses the webshooter to hang her from the ceiling...she's annoyed at first, demanding to be let down...then tries being nice when that doesn't work. Then tries saying she'll scream if he touches her..but he mentions that..I forget who ..are out of town, i think, so they won't be bothered..

And then the last two panels I really enjoyed:

"..besides, you only have to put up with the webbing for an hour...that's how long it takes to dissovle. In the meantime..I know where you're most sensitive."

"Peter, not there...NOT THERE!!"

(except they show the outside of the apartment , so you can't see what's going on)

Damn, with her, Spidey's got it good, even with all the crap he's gone through.
😛

Why would it be wrong? Nothing at all wrong with it at all. It's been done before, even in a Stephen King novel. I forget which on specifically. Either it was "IT" or "The Stand" or.....??????

I seriously doubt the publisher and or editor would have a problem with it.

TTD

LOL I have like 8 people who want to be editor (just because they want to know first!) and I don't think they'll have a problem with it. I keep forgetting that what some think of as one thing, others think as another.

I seem to remember a LOT of tickling in the Goosebumps books by RL Stine...I used to have a whole set but I don't anymore...anyone else remember this?

It happened a lot in the Pippi Longstocking books I had a kid...
XOXO

I remember Superman tickling Lois Lane once.

I'm off again/ on again working on a sci-fi novel, and even tho it will have some actual people from our time- Marque De Sade, Christopher Columbus, etc...., as well as some ficticious characters- Superman, Batman, Spider-man, Joker, and many more- it has got quite a bit of tickling in it already, but it all blends in nicely together....

Example-

There is a scene at Arkham Asylum, where a woman, Missy, had been stated as the head Nurse, and puts her training to use, as a self-professed therapist, using "Sensitivity Training" on the female patients at Arkham, such as Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn.

It goes into quite a bit of detail about the tickling, but later on in the book, the entire Arkham population is released, and as they are released, Missy is caught by a stairwell on the female wing, as 150 female prisoners come to get revenge on her- guess how?- before ultimately killing her ( not death by tickling, tho)....

But, I have said too much, and it may be awhile before I can get to working on the book again, so.....

i agree with most people, its not a bad thing to have a scene in there. if editors really have a problem with it (which they shouldn't) its not too difficult to just downplay it and say its an important part of character development 😛

I bet that'd be fun...imagine being as fast as Superman..or the Flash. Those two could probably tickle someone so fast that it'd feel like they were being tickled everywhere at the same time.

I agree with everyone. We have become similar to "drug-sniffing dogs" but to tickling mentions and mainstream finds.
Where a "vanilla flavour with real vanilla chunks ice cream" person will skip over a paragraph of tickling in a novel, we will "sniff it out".

If the tickling material is in context to the theme of the novel then everything should go smoothly.
