I know they haven't issued it since his "parting" from the Yankees in 2008. I also know that the man who hired Torre.. and ultimately let Torre go, the not always so great, George Steinbrenner, is no longer with us.. but.. doesn't it seem that it might be time to finally retire the number.. of probably the greatest Yankee manager not named Casey Stengel?
What else did the guy have to do to have his number retired? Four World Series wins in five years from 1996 to 2000. Six AL pennants from 1996 to 2003., Many more division titles.
It almost seems.. hypocritical. Every other Yankee great has had their number retired. The only Yankee great left.. who hasn't had his number retired.. is still playing. Number 2, Derek Jeter. When he retires at the end of this year.. his number will be retired next year.
If one is thinking.. "Torre was let go by Steinbrenner.. so maybe that';s why". Er,, Billy Martin.. who won.. exactly one World Championship as a manager in 1977, even though he did win several as a player.. was fired by King George FIVE TIMES between 1978 and 1988, and his number is retired. Supposedly, according to a Wikipedia article, even after Martin's last "firing" in 1988, he was working for George just before Martin;'s tragic car accident in 1989, and it was said he was Steinbrenner's choice to manage the Yankees in 1990.
I think it's time to retire Joe Torre's number, formally. Bobby Cox only won.. one World Championship, even though he did win fourteen straight division titles, and the Braves retired his number.
Thoughts on the issue of Torre's number being retired? By the way for those who don't know, if they were to retire Torre's number, and assuming they almost certainly retire Derek Jeter's number 2 when Jeter is finished playing this year, that would mean the Yankees would have every number between 1 (Billy Martin) and 10 (Phil Rizzuto) retired. Fitting, considering how important all the men who wore those numbers, were to the history of the Yankees, as players, managers, and in Rizzuto's case, long time broadcaster after his playing days.
