Jim Harbaugh is expected to agree to a five-year, $25-million deal with the San Francisco 49ers, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

The 49ers have scheduled a press conference for 6:30 ET, Schefter wrote on his personal Twitter account. Harbaugh also met with the Miami Dolphins and Stanford officials in recent days.

He was reportedly deciding between San Francisco and Stanford. Stanford’s12-1 season ended with a 40-12 win against Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl.

Harbaugh replaces Mike Singletary, who was 18-22 in three seasons as coach of the 49ers. Singletary was fired Dec. 26 after his team was eliminated from the playoffs in a 25-17 loss at St. Louis.

I think they just need to bring a black coach in so they dont get fined for Rooney rule then it will be a done deal

WOO HOO!!!

Welcome to the team, coach!

It's not like he doesn't have any experience in the NFL. It's just his first head job in the NFL.

Harbaugh is a great hire. Like Ticklefiend mentioned, Harbaugh does have NFL experience. He is not a college coach making his first appearance in the NFL.

The first thing he needs to do in regards to personnel is get a QB. The Niners currently have 3 bums at the position (Alex Smith, Troy Smith, David Carr) and that is really the only position where there is a severe lack of production.

Only time will tell whether Harbaugh is a good head coach in pros. Getting rid of Singletary was a good first step.

San Fran must find a rb that can take the load off Gore. He is a really good rb who is extremely brittle especially for his age .

Next year is make or break year for Crabtree and who knows what kind of production niners will get from Davis from year to year

Read this blog on why Harbaugh is anything but your typical college coach. I particularly like the part where former NFL QB Brock Huard talked about how the X's and O's that Harbaugh was running were more advanced than anything in the NFL, let alone the NCAA.

I'm thrilled the 49ers actually made the effort to go out and get the candidate everyone else wanted as opposed to rushing to their interim coach who had won a few games and assuming he actually had the skills and acumen to be a head couch (sorry Mike). I have little doubt that Harbaugh has the strategic ability, competitive drive, and player management skills (huge deficiency for Singletary) to be a successful NFL coach.

This doesn't of course mean I expect the 49ers to be an elite team next year. Harbaugh's biggest and most important immediate task will be to have a fantastic 2011 draft (assuming there is a draft), and specifically find the right fit at QB for the franchise. You can have all the talent in the world on your team, but if you stick the likes of Alex Smith, Troy Smith, and Shaun Hill behind center, you can only go so far.

Actually, Brian Westbrook and Anthony Dixon are capable backups to Gore. The 49er running game is their strength. When Gore got hurt, they still were able to run the ball quite effectively. They just had major issues with QB. I think Crabtree will blossom into a good receiver. He just needs a guy who can actually throw the ball with some sort of accuracy.

Time will tell if Harbaugh is a good coach. But he sure is better than Mike Nolan. I knew Nolan was going to flop...

Some media people are saying Vince Young could wind up in SF. Good lord I hope not. Vince Young is a crappy QB. Why go from one college shotgun option QB (Alex Smith) to another (VY)?

I'm right with you about VY. I don't want him on the team. The man is a one man drama parade. I don't think Harbaugh would want him anyway. If we get a QB via free agency, it'll be somebody like McNabb or Kolb
