Joe Mauer signed an 8 year, $184 million dollar contract over the weekend. While I am a little sad that this means he might not ever wind up in a Red Sox uniform, I am happy for the people of Minnesota, and for baseball in general. Having some semblance of parity is good for the sport.

Now, let's just hope he's still as good in 2016 as he is now. . .

no offense.... but your statement about being sad that he might never end up in Red Sox uniform is everything that is WRONG in baseball right now .

This isn`t a case for parity... this is a case of the Twins being smart enough realize if they let their hometown homegrown face of the franchise leave it was lights out for the franchise . The Twins also got good timing on this by knowing with a brand new stadium they would have more income coming in to pay Mauer .

This complete sense of ENTITLEMENT that Yankees and Red Sox fans have is bad for baseball and just plain ludicrous .

The truth may hurt; Mauer NEVER ever wanted to play for the Yankees or Redsox. He wanted to play for his hometown franchise. Imagine that !

Today is a good day to be a fan of the MLB for a change.

God bless America!

Because God is not a Yankees fan today! 😀

I just can't understand how the economy is still bad and yet we can athletes this much money

Yet people are still flocking to watch baseball in Minnesota so I think with the Twins now, as with the Yankees, Red Sox, etc., the slow economy is not a giant factor since they will still sell tickets...

Of course I don't necessarily agree with this deal for other reasons. While Mauer's numbers are good... that kind of money may bring those kinds of expectations: the key to a World Series title. Mauer's good in the regular season but in the post-season he has only 1 RBI in two post-season trips with the Twins. It's good that he hit .417 last year but it doesn't mean much when you don't score...

Having such a big price tag now puts pressure not only on Mauer but on the Twins too -> they have to justify giving Mauer that contract and losing out in the ALDS won't cut it anymore. I give the Twinkies 3 years (I will offer them a mulligan this year for losing Joe Nathan to Tommy John surgery as that is a huge loss for them IMO) and if after that third year if the Twins do not have anything to show for the deal beyond an ALDS OR an ALCS visit then it's a bad deal.

I repsect the amount of gratitude and faith they're giving Mauer but let's be honest - this contract might put them into a bind they won't be able to get out of.

I wouldn't call it entitlement.

I'm a fan of baseball first and foremost, so overall, I'm glad he stayed. It's the same way I'll be glad if Adrian Gonzalez stays with the Padres, instead of being traded to another team. Each team needs a superstar or two just to keep things interesting.

However, I'm also a Red Sox fan, and so I'm going to naturally want the best players for my team. If someone came up to me and said, "You can have Joe Mauer or you can have (name basically any other catcher, with the potential exception of Matt Wieters)", I'm going to pick Mauer. As I hope you would with your own favorite team.
