I just read that Joe Torre is going to retire as manager of the L.A. Dodgers at the end of the season. Hitting coach Don Mattingly will be the new Dodger manager in 2011. That will be Mattingly's first major league managing job.
I have immense respect for Joe. He was the manager of the Braves, when I first became a Braves fan, in 1983. He had so much success with the Yankees, with the four world titles, two of which, as everyone knows, were against my Braves.
Two of the game's greatest managers will be retiring in the same year. Joe Torre and Bobby Cox. Baseball will look very different next year, without those two fine gentlemen in the dugout. In five or so years from now, both will likely be enshrined in the Hall of Fame, for their amazing success in the game.
