I`m not sure if there`s anything left in the tank, but anytime you can add one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history to your staff I believe this is a good move. Besides, with the Chicago Cubs doing their usual late season choke job, (101 years and counting):eeew: this is a low budget gamble. Boston will pay all but $100,000 of Smoltz`s salary.

Almost all teams are short of starting pitchers. They may as well give him a try.

I blog on the Atlanta Journal Constitution, and the sportswriters there think Smoltz has nothing left in the tank, and is done, but $100,000 is relative chicken feed in baseball, and Smoltz has a lot of postseason experience. If he can help the Cards at all, this will turn out to be a good signing for them.

All these former HOF braves pitchers... the end of their careers are so sad. definitely wish them the best in the end.

In other news, the entire angels lineup last night was batting above .300! can you believe it in august??

I always assumed Smoltz would sign as a reliever, and I'm shocked he's going to be a starter.

Best of luck to him, but if he has success, it speaks more to the difference between the NL and the AL, rather than his own improvement.

What a debut!!! Five scoreless innings, 75 pitches and 9 strikeouts.:goodjob:
