I'm less annoyed with the fact that she said no, and more disgusted with the fact that she forced him to give her the lyrics, and actually record the song before saying no. I see supreme irony in the fact that she walks around in such outlandish costumes...but will not stand for anyone making parody out of her.

You simply could not have done a better job at making yourself an easy target, Gaga. There's a fine line between originality and insanity.

Wierd Al is a good man. He wrote on his blog he legally does not have to have the artist's permission to do a parody.He asks them anyway.

I think the only other person to hassle him over a parody was Coolio and that was really a misunderstanding as Weird Al thought he had permission to do the Coolio parody but actually did not as there was a miscommuncation.

Weird Al is the best! I remember when Coolio hassled Al about the song. How could I forget? It's Al's song about my hometown.. "Amish Paradise", which, as those of us who have listened to it know.. is a paraody written to Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise". Personally, and I'm not just saying this because I live in Lancaster, I actually like Amish Paradise, better than Coolio's song.

Lady Gaga really should lighten up, and realize that paraodies are what makes Al, Al. Actually, in a way, the artist of the song Al is paraodying, should probably consider it a tribute, that Al wants to write a song, about their song.

Update: Lady Gaga just now gave approval to Weird Al to release the song with his album. Apparently the first response he had gotten was from her manager who never forwarded the song to Lady Gaga herself. He apologized, and Lady Gaga is thrilled to have the song released.

Well. I kind of feel like a dick. However, most of my statement still applies. She's far more talented than I could ever be, but she still tries too hard, and often just comes off as weird to me. But hey, maybe I'm just boring.

That outcome seemed likely as I was chasing Gaga's side of the story for a piece earlier this afternoon - when I emailed her manager, Troy Carter, to ask why she'd rejected the song, he wrote, "Gaga didn't refuse permission of the record. In fact, she's never heard it and is a big Weird Al fan." Which directly contradicted everything Yankovic had written: namely, that Gaga herself had flatly refused to grant permission, having heard the song. So I reached out to Yankovic, who wrote, "Well, um, I'm baffled. I'll let you know what, if anything, I find out."
