I was enjoying an article in the new Reader's Digest called "Grouchily Ever After: It's the good-natured grumbling that keeps our marraige from crumbling", and these quotes had a certain resonance with me:

"Laughter is as intimate as you can get without touching someone," notes Gina Barreca, a professor of feminist studies at the University of Connecticut and the author of It's Not That I'm Bitter. "Think about it. In any movie, right before two people touch, they're laughing or crying."

Also:

"The only reason to be in a long-term relationship with another adult is to have someone to laugh with," says Gina Barreca. "That's it. Because you can always hire someone to put in windows."

On another forum that I'm a member of, one of the mods is a woman who lost her husband to lung cancer a few years ago.

In a tribute to him, the text under her avatar reads:

"He could always make me laugh." She has often said that this was very important to her, they felt that humor was important and always made each other laugh. My parents are the same way.

I've been involved with a few guys, two seriously. The first was a serious type of man, who could get angry. He never took his anger out on me, and our relationship was a good one, however, the next relationship was with a much less serious minded man and he loved to laugh and make me laugh, and I have a ton of happy memories from that relationship.

Excellent observations, CD.

Oddly, it's as I mature that I realize how important being silly is to enjoying life.

I'm a giggler..by nature..and i make David laugh.

Laughter is definitely an important aspect of any relationship.

It may seem like common sense, but I believe a partner, spouse~ however you see them, should first and foremost be your best friend. Best friends support each other, hang out, make each other laugh. They are there when you need them and you are there for them. You are eager to see them at the end of the day~ they love what you do, and you love them for who they are.

I see a lot of people in relationships where they aren't best friends. They are in a relationship~ married, dating, etc~ and are intimate. But at the end of the day, they have other 'best friends' that know them better, they feel they understand better. A real relationship~ a good one should be one where you could see yourself with that person above all else...

...where their laughter is pure, and delicious and something you strive to induce every day~ at the touch of your fingertips... or not. <3
