Ok today was my first day on my new job 30 minutes away from my house pay is 7.50 a week. well the job sucks, so i leave today at the end of my shift...i get a phone call from a security officer job for a small local college here. I did not expect them to call, but to my surprise they did! so i phoned them back and i have an interview coming up possibly tomorrow, friday, or sometime next week. problem is my boss asked me today if i was staying i politely told him yes. (this was before i knew about the security interview) so, the problem is what can i do if i have an interview set up on a day im supposed to work? do i tell my boss now or do i call in sick, go to the interview etc. security job is 2 minutes from my house little more pay, but part time. Job i have now is 7.50 30 minute drive 5 days a wk. (and it sucks)

Make the best with what you have, but never have a chance to pass up something you really want to do.

I would call in sick and go to the interview.
Seems more what you want to do so don't let it pass by you.

yeah good point there besides ive been getting interested in a security officer postion for quite sometime. this one does not require a criminal justice degree lol i mean is 7.50 an hour worth a 30 minute drive for work?

I would say call in sick and go to the interview. But in this economy, getting and keeping a fill time job can be hard, no matter how shitty the job. Keep that in mind.

I would see if there was anyway to switch a shift with someone, so that they can cover for you that day. If you just got the job and you are already calling in sick that makes you look unreliable. Simply explain to whomever, that you already had a prior engagement that day that you had completely forgotten about and you have no way out of it. You don't even have to tell them what your doing, last time I checked that was none of their business.

I assume you mean $7.50 per hour rather then per week.🙂

Set up a firm day and time for an interview. You might be able to schedule it for a time when you have gotten off from your current job.

You told your boss in good faith that you plan on staying. But you need to do what is in your own best interest.Sounds like you could walk to work rather then drive. That would save some money, and help make up for the shorter hours.Any chance of getting more hours on this prospective job?

I would not tell your current employer you have other prospects. That is not looked upon with favor by most employers.🙂

I would go to the interview, and switch shifts with someone at your current job, with the hope you get the other job. You have two things in favor with the other job. One is the close proximity to your house, and that you dont have to drive 30 mins each way, and two is the increase in pay, even if slight.

I'm one whose always believed when offered a work opportunity that's better then the one you have, even slightly better, take a chance, you have nothing to lose. Good Luck. I hope you get the closer job with the better pay.

yeah i meant 7.50 an hour sorry lol one problem about switching mitch, job is only first shift lol so i cant swap i guess i can just work til i hear from the security job.

Another option is to explain to the security job rep that you've already started another job, but are still interested in his position. This may allow to schedule around your current work schedule and will also make you appear more reliable to the new opportunity.
