Live 8

what is this charitable nonsense? i only watched live 8 to see the stars

here. here. i agree. not too many usa voices on the scrolling list, come on american chaps, let's show those european blokes how it's done.

why should i sign this? While brad pitt and bono make millions of dollars from merchandising, concerts and whatnot, im supposed to be guilted to send part of my 10.30\hr paycheck to help stop poverty? If Brad Pitt would actually donate some of his own money, say 1/100th of his fortune instead of going on TV and telling us we are bad people for not giving money, maybe he could make a difference. Instead, he visits starving childern in Africa who don't know his name and feels like he is doing them a favor.

Couldn't agree more... Chances are that if you send 10 dollars, 9 of them will get lost along the way anyway...

If you really want to help people then do some volunteer work or something...

Uh well better send nothing you're right. Wait until someone else does, you'll save ten dollars and can buy whatever you want instead of wasting time for those poor suckers.
Come on if all people thought your way we won't get far .... even worse imagine you need money and you read something like you wrote ..... weird.

If you go to the site you will see that they are not asking for your money. They want you to sign a petition which will be presented at the G8 summit to 8 world leaders. It won't cost you a thing! ^^

was the concert half as good as the original live aid was. the hollywood brother seemsto think that philadelphia got better superstars last time around although def leppard and bon jovi are pretty good

Nope, won't cost a thing... :weird:

Well... So long as you ignore the fact that the debts the G8 are being asked to excuse were lent out of money that originally came from our tax dollars. Or do Bono and Brad Pitt imagine that the magical loan fairy created that money out of thin f*cking air to lend to third-world nations? Speaking of which, they would also like the magical money fairy to start doubling the amount of aid we already shovel out. Guess where the funding for THAT is going to come from? Here's a hint: Their names are John and Jane Taxpayer, and they are YOU AND ME. I am NOT pleased that some pack of jackass celebrities are attempting to FORCE charitable donations out of people through the re-distribution of tax dollars.

Its annoying enough to be under a constant barrage of bullshit from so-called celebrities to go and see their stupid movie, or buy their crappy CD... But when they start telling "the little people" how to live, it truly makes me want to vomit.

Look man, I'm all for helping as much as posible, but I'd rather give my money to the red cross(and I do in fact) than any of these charitys... Also, what I said about voluntering was not a joke or a sarcastic comment, it is a much better way to help someone than to send some bucks away and then feel like you've done your part... My mother was a teacher and she went every month to buy groceries for some of her poorest students and then delivered them to their homes, she taught me what it is to really help someone, not some bullshit celebrities...

As for Paddy, I owe you an apology, I hadn't read the page and didn't know exactly what it was about. I've given it a look now and signed it...

I understand that it's better to give directly to a person when you can but, usually people do give at the Red Cross and other caritative administrations. But you never know if your money will arrive to the people .... last time i given something was for the tsunami victims, i made my donation to someone who had direct contact with the people in Thailand but he has no idea why the money is still unseen over there and that's weird ... there were 5 milliards collected !!!!!!

As I said, money is likely to get lost along the way... but hopefully those 5 milliards are just a little behind scheduled and will reach the needy at some point...

I could care less about Live 8,for I'm just glad that I avoided it(especially with how Pink Floyd's reunion was badly handled).

First of all, the foundation involved was not started by Geldorf, Bono, or Brad Pitt. Go here to read about it. www.one.org

Secondly, no money was made off the concert. It was free admission and the artists all performed for nothing.

Third, no money is being asked for or collected at the site. As mentioned earlier, it is a petition to add your voice so that people dont die of starvation. So we forgive the debts--that amounts to about 15.00 per person in the US.

Oh my! How CAN we survive.

Tis a shame we dont care enough as a nation to keep children from starving while we throw away more food than they will ever see in their shortened lifetimes.

Next time you throw away that last slice of pizza___think about the kid that could have lived another day.

Awareness and a voice to get the world leaders to DO something. That is what this is all about. If we dont show them that we care, then they will do nothing and thousands more will die unecessary deaths.

playing a practical game for practical purposes and a good cause = OK

i signed and then i watched.

if u want check out http://music.aol.com/live_8_concert/live_now and see the rebroadcasts.

their idea is practical. fans of bono or floyd or elton john or coldplay cover the gamut of eligible voters in most countries, and the G8 guys meeting this week know that. this is relevant because, for example, canada and germany both have gov'ts in precarious political positions and both know if they forgive these debts, they will acquire more votes. geldof knows they know....the bottom line = lives will be saved. 4 those who mostly think profits are the most important thing, debt forgiveness = a chance 4 the forgivers 2 make more money in a situation where they had little chance of re-collecting their loans. for those who think saving lives is most important, this = a chance to save a lot of them in one fell swoop. 4 those who think both r important, this = 2 birds with one stone

i can't believe in the same lifetime that i have seen the berlin wall undone and pink floyd re-done. it would have been nice to see syd barrett up there 2, but who knows maybe next awareness/charity concert we will see that plus taupin and john and mccartney and starr...

I live paycheck to paycheck and i work hard for my paycheck

Next time lars ulrich decides to sue kids and other people who illigally download his music because he feels he's being robbed of less money than he already has, maybe he should give to this fund and care about eliminating poverty

Also, where is the concern for the poor and handicapped in these powerful nations, do these people mean nothing? Worry about your own affairs first, then others. Yes this may sound selfish but there is something as being too selfless

I agree completly with what you are saying, but I don't think this is about what you think it is... The Lars Ulrich example you give is a great example of what we should really be thinking about, those kind of greedy excesses are the kind of thing that we should be worrying about(there's a really great episode of southpark about this). We should't take it all out on the poor children or people in general who are starving overseas, it is not their fault...
Besides, I don't think they can pay up the money anyway, and what is the G8 gonna do if they don't pay? Evict them?

Also, its being reported that all the bands who performed live 8 are now recieving booms in record sales due to their publicity

When interviewing africans, most of them didnt even know it was going on....Origionally there was no african band playing but later for PR purposes they decided to squeeze one in, from south africa i believe

Yes africa is poor but so are many regions of the united states and in asia, yes the concert is aimed at ending world poverty but its main focus is africa. Where are the concerts and concerns for other poor nations? Im surprised bono and sean penn didnt get together and have some concert to protest the iraq war.
