Pete Van Weiren, who broadcast Atlanta Braves games for more than 30 years. "The Professor" has passed away from cancer at age 69.

This news deeply saddens me. He was a wonderful broadcaster, and left us, far, far too young.

R. I. P. Pete.

He was a fine broadcaster. Rest In Peace, Mr. Van Weiren.
Which brings to mind that today is the sixth anniversary of the death of Braves broadcaster Harry Christopher "Skip" Caray. 🙁 I always enjoyed listening to him on TBS.

I grew up listening to Skip, Pete, Don Sutton and Joe Simpson on TBS when I was real young. I partially credit those guys for my love of baseball. Sad to hear the Professor has left us, he was a first class broadcaster

What impressed me most about that broadcasting team was its professionalism. The Braves, then in the NL West, were in two very close pennant races with the Dodgers in 1982 and 1983. (The Braves won the NL West in 1982 and the Dodgers in 1983.) They gave an accurate description of the Braves/Dodgers games those years, praising their own players when appropriate and pointing out their substandard play when appropriate, and they did the same for the opposing team.

Those pennant races were before my time, but I hear great "war stories" all the time.

Of course as a Dodgers fan, you have the privilage of listening to Vin Scully....the gold standard in sports broadcasting
