Do people really lose weight from doing the treadmill?

I mean,. I know at least some of it has to do with diet as well.. but..

I've been sticking to my treadmill workouts.. at least three times a week, and sometimes four. I do.. two miles each time, which takes me about a half hour or more.

I know that the amount of calories one burns for each session increases as they spend more time on the treadmill. After a half hour on the treadmill, I see that I'm burning 100 calories, I guess per minute.

I just wonder if doing the treadmill several times a week, for a half hour, two miles at a time, really causes someone to lose weight?

Thoughts?

It certainly helps. I'm doing the same thing, but you defiantly have to stick with it.

The Big thing I started doing was change my Drinking Habits. I pretty much substituted Water for everything. Especially Sodas.

I'll have a Gatorade every now and then, but it's mostly Water now.

I do stick with it.

As for the drinking habits.. Errrr. I drink water. but, also diet iced tea, hot tea, and diet soda.

You can still enjoy other drinks, it's just about Moderation.

I have a reasonable amount of experience lifting weights and doing cardio Mitchel, and unless you are running exceptionally fast (like professional athlete fast), I can't see you burning 100 calories a minute. I'm not sure if the machine is telling you this or you read it somewhere, but in my experience, that is very wrong. We're talking 3000 calories in 30 minutes, which while not impossible, is certainly something that would require a very impressive level of cardio. If you were losing that much three or four times a week, you would likely notice the weight just dropping off you.

That being said, don't let that dissuade you. Part of working out is not only building up oneself so that they can continuously increase their workout level, but it has many benefits that are not tangible right away. When I started boxing, it was difficult as fuck to run for a long period, but as time went on I was able to move faster and run further. Yes, it is an uphill battle, but if you keep at it, you'll notice the results and they will only continue to stack up. You'll be able to do more things and as you continue, things you might not have been able to do in years. It will also just increase your quality of life in general.

Just keep up the exercising Mitch, and you'll feel better for it in the end.

Thanks.

Today was my day off, because I do it every other day.. Tomorrow morning its back to the gym for my 2 mile walk. Good timing too because it's Sunday. My knee has been hurting a little bit, but I'm still planning to go.

I can't speak from experience, I would imagine treadmill use would at least increase general fitness and stamina, - maybe it depends on whether you want to lose statistical weight or whether you're hoping to actually tone up certain areas of your body visually.
I think if you 'suck in' your stomach when you exercise this helps to really work those stomach muscles. I was told to do this while climbing stairs, running etc.

I play competitive badminton so that tends to fill my exercise time each week, but when I do extra exercise I think swimming is a great way to lose weight, gives the whole body a good workout and increase general fitness - it's also a good option if you have niggling injuries. Although I do find the whole process of getting in to the car park, changing, fighting for space in the pool, drying off etc quite stressful!

I used to do a lot of running in preparation for a charity run - this definitely improved my developing beer belly, my stamina and indeed my mental health. Not as much fun in winter of course. Running also really highlights when you're unfit or are lacking stamina, but I found once I'd be doing it for a few weeks, building up the distance etc, all of a sudden everything clicked and I felt I could run like Forrest Gump.

Diet obviously plays a big part so I tend to be quite hard on myself in terms of making sure I get fruit and veg every day, lots of oily fish, green tea (helps increase metabolism after a meal)

I wouldn't worry too much about the statistics, just crack on with a pattern of exercise that you'll stick to, support it with a good diet (including occasional treats!) and do simple things like walk instead of drive where possible, take the stairs instead of the elevator, don't have a big meal before bed etc

The treadmill is helping. I've definitely lost weight. I weighed myself at the gym yesterday, and.. with sweatsuit and sneakers on, on a Dr type scale, I was only 177, which means I'm probably in the low 170s in actual weight, as Dr's type scales are high, and I had a lot of clothes, and sneakers, on.

Thats so surprising and unexpected that calorie burning would result in weightloss

I would suggest to crank it up a bit. Don't think about time think about intensity. You could spend an hour on a treadmill plodding along or you could increase your pace and burn the same amount of calories, or more, in half the time. When you're on the thing, ask yourself, '' Can you push harder '' , most of the time the answer is yes.

Sometimes I do crank it up a bit, Bizkit. It depends.

I'll usually start by setting the pace at 3.5 miles per hour. As I'm on the treadmill for a bit, and get used to it, i'll increase the speed to 4 miles per hour, or a little more.

I did my two miles on the treadmill this morning, and it took me between 30 and 35 minutes. I did what I usually do.. started it at 3.5, and then cranked it up to 4.0 or a little more at some points.
