In a rather surprising move, Chicago Cubs manager Lou Pinella, suddenly retired today, to spend more time with his aliing mother. Lou had originally said he was going to retire at the end of the season, but, decided to do so early, saying "Family has to come first". I can definitely understand how Lou feels. I would do the same thing, if I was a major league manager.

Lou was a good manager for a long time. He probably belongs in the Hall of Fame. I was living in CT when he started his managerial career with the Yankees. In fact, my friend Adam went to high school with Lou's daughter, Kristi.

Good player, Good Manager, Good Guy. He will be missed.

Hats of to him.

I am going to miss candid shots of him picking his nose on the bench. When he was a player he was always twirling his hair. The players used to call him Cuban Pinella. Though a heady, smart ballpalyer, he was one of the worst base runners of all-time. I remember him getting thrown out at all 4 bases in one game. A great situational hitter, good contact hitter and hit and run. Great at advancing runners by hitting behind them and could pop one out when need be. Smart, smart contact hitter. Decent fielder, ok arm, could play left or right, not a CF. A better then average manager, off the top of my head I think he is like 14 in career wins... Looked it up, yep 14th. He also managed the Reds to a 4 game sweep over the A's in the 1990 World Series. He was also one of the better color men when he was in the booth... I think all things considered he will probably make the Hall.

Have a great retirement Lou!
Us Seattle fans owe having a baseball team still to the combined efforts of you and Junior so thanks for that!

I always loved seeing him toss the bases up the foul line (among other things) when he was disgusted with the umpire, but hopefully he can relax now that he is done with managing.
