Okay..So when I was young I transfered over from LP to CD's quite well. Here was a format that virtually kept the playing performance intacted (no scratches, pops or crackles),we got remastered albums and rare outtakes/live recordings previously unreleased..wonderful!!
As for video....well I started with betamax, even though VHS was winning the battle over popularity. But when the time to transfer over to VHS came,it was still okay because the Movie videos in that day were primarily avaliable through rental only.(You might eventually buy a used copy or shell out 40 plus dollars for a new one).
But then the industry realized the popularity of owning a VHS copy of your Favourite Movie.(Around the Time of the first Batman movie).Soon hundreds of new movies were immediately available for sale.I amassed a sizeable collection of movies that I may have each watched twice...
No matter I thought...I was like a film connisseur.(Almost like Hollywood Mogul a film library).
I managed to make it past the laserdisc craze but not the DVD!
I thought I could make it past the frenzy!.....but all those extra goodies you get on a DVD....(sigh).Reluctantly,painfully,but somewhat youthfully excited again I changed formats, sold all my "hard earned 90's money-ed" VHS Movies ($5 bucks per)and started the process anew.
...And in that time I bought DVD's with very little extras only to have them (the film companies)release an Anniversary Edition with...ha ha!!!! -Newly discovered footage they just happened to find!!!(Makes rather sarcastic quotation symbols with fingers).
Now I have probably more DVD's than I had VHS!!!
NOW!!!! they're going to release HD-DVD which involves a blue laser which is much thinner than the normal laser (Therefore, more space on a disc)...AND THEY WON"T PLAYBACK CURRENT DVD's!!!!
You'd think they would manufacture a machine that had both capabilities!! - but then - I wouldn't be enticed into buying "blue laser" DVD movies....with even more extra features they just happened to find behind the shelf!!!!!!(makes even more sarcastic quotation signs with fingers)....(heavier sigh). What to do??!!

I must say the music end isn't as bothersome because I'm not buying
as many CD's anymore.I got as far as burning old songs off Napster but have not gotten into mp3 players or ipods yet.
I'm wondering..if we start getting new music of the internet instead of from a Record store, will there be any employment for album/CD cover artists to make pleasing covers? Will you miss the feeling of opening up an LP or CD and having a physical product in your hands?
Just wondering!!??

This is a great subject actually. I have to honestly say that theres nothing like original vinyl LPs. On the older stuff from the 70s and 80s I will say that if you have a quality turntable and cartridge (and of corse took care of your records through the years)..95% of the time these "digital remastered" CDs are a load of crap. Most of what I listen to (aside from the classic rock stuff) aint even avalible on CD nor ever will be in this country anyhow..but heres 2 examples of where vinyl is better. Earth Wind & Fire's "All In All" LP and Rolling Stones "Emotional Rescue" LP. The EWF one on CD is pitched too fast and not to mention its very hollow sounding. The Stones one..its pure hollow sounding and no dynamic range on the CD.

As for the new DVD things your talkin bout..havent even heard of em LOL..but its just another way to make money. I agree that DVD blows VHS away in quality however...id never buy this new DVD player type thing you talkin bout...hell it took me till last Xmas to even get my first DVD player and now cause of the region bullshit I may actualy be looking at getting a new one cause a DVD I realllly wanna get is only avalible in europian region 2.

Technology can be good on some things but then on alot it just gets out of hand and is a crock of shit. Id be happy with a VCR, a turntable and tape deck. I havent bought a CD in a looong time cause I dont like new music...it all pretty much sucks to me. There have been a few new songs ive liked but, in that case I just download em rather than wasting cash on a whole CD that I wouldnt like the rest anyhow😛

I have a friend who swears by vinyl as well.He goes to record & tape shows and finds records still unopened! (In its shrink wrap).
I suppose as long as they keep making turntables and parts to replace and keep them working,it will be alright.
Only thing is - Electronic Manufacturers in Britain are discontinuing the VCR.Will the VCR disappear completely!? In this case,I think that's more likely to happen.I've been meaning to buy a cheap VCR so I'll have one for the day I transfer all my taped VHS shows to DVD.
(Of Course by then, the current type of DVD might be history!!!):idunno: :ignite:

Vinyl is still being made to this day in the dance music and hip hop/rap genres of music but is only avalible to DJ's for the most part as some of the good DJs still out there today mix on the tables. But for turntables themselves...you can ocationaly find a cheap made plastic one for your home stereo at Radio Shack but for the most part..to get a decent table ya gotta go to a DJ store now days unfortunatly.

And I can actualy see what your saying about VHS going bye bye. Over here im sure this will happen as well just like it did in about 1990/91 when they stopped making records and good turntables for the public to buy and everything went tape and CD. Now my next task...get a DVD recorder😀 I already got the CDR recorder so thats been nice putting vinyl and tapes to CD.

Actually I hear they will still play back the old DVD's. I was talking to someone who is in the know and they said that they will. Now he could be wrong to but he has never steered me wrong.

One of the main reason the studios want to go to the new HD DVD format is because the encryption used on the current DVD, called CSS (stands for Content Scrambling System), was not protecrted under "trade secret status" when they created it. That is why all those programs that let you copy a DVD that are out there are in stores. But this new anti copy encryption for the HD DVD's will be licensed as a "trade secret" so that if anyone breaks they encryption, they can leaglly pursued by the studios and the programs can be stopped from being sold or disseminated. This is the big stumbling block in the current cases with regards to CSS. In fact, I recall reading a few years ago when these programs started popping up that the court ruled that the CSS was never submitted for trade secret status, and therefore the programs could not be prosecuted becasue of that.

In fact, here is a page talking about CSS and it not being trade secret status in ragards to one program called DeCSS

And yeah, now that set top DVD recorders are coming down in price, and being made by everyone under the sun instead of a few manufacturers is what will cause the death knell for VHS. It is the thing that companies knew they had to wait for before they killed VHS. If they did so before that, people would have complained about what will they use to record their TV shows.

Sad, but True.

Article here.

I'll miss VHS tapes and all, but digital truly does have better sound, picture, and all. I probably won't upgrade past DVD anytime soon, though.

This is just like how it went with records to CD in about 1990. After reading that news story it reminded me very much of that. One thing I dont understand though...why in the hell do they still make and sell cassete tapes? LOL, I know alot of people in the mid - late 80s and even in the begining of the 90s were going to that format (I never did cause they sucked and vinyl lasts forever if you take care of it unlike tapes..think I have about maybe 20 tapes ive bought in total through all my years on this earth). But I think they should do away with tapes..no one uses em anymore and its a waste of manufacturing. People record on CD's now rather than making tapes wether you do it the same concept as making a tape with a CD deck (which is what I do) or make em on your PC via mp3s/wavs/ogg's.
