1. Sam Cooke (1931-1964)
-Considered one of the pioneers and founders of soul music.

A Change Is Gonna Come is probably his best song, which I think came out posthumously after he was killed. I can't find the song on youtube, just people trying to sing it from their living rooms and such. But download it, it's amazing.

2. Otis Redding (1941-1967)
-Possibly one of his most famous songs, "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" was recorded just three days before his death and released posthumously.

3. Ray Charles (1930 - 2004)
-Frank Sinatra called him "the only true genius in the business." Rolling Stone Magazine named him number 10 on their list of 100 greatest artists of all time in 2004 and number 2 on their list of 100 greatest singers of all time.

Other great soul works:

The Impressions, "People Get Ready"... if you ever wonder where the link between soul and gospel is, well besides Sam Cooke, look no further than this song.

Sam And Dave, "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" wonderfully produced piece of work here. Just wrenches your heart right out.

New York City, "I'm Doin' Fine Now"... soul after breakup. From the early '70s, this one just picks me up when I'm feeling down.

Jerry Butler, "Only The Strong Survive": Among the early harbingers of the kind of Philly soul that Gamble and Huff were about to bring to the world, this is a great song.

Parliament - Chocolate City - A humorous number about Washington DC in particular and race relations in general.

Stevie Wonder - Superstition - Possibly one of the most infectious pop songs of all time.

The Isley Brothers - That Lady - A funk/soul number that cranks in a very serious way!

Little Sister - You're The One - A funk number with a driving beat. Sounds like a love song at first, but it's really about social consciousness.
