New Haven (WTNH) - The man who accused of throwing flammable liquid on his girlfriend and step-daughter, and then proceeded to set his girlfriend on fire, was an act of retaliation against the step-daughter who had reported actions he had done to her, authorities said.
Howard Stewart remains behind bars on $2 million bond following his arraignment Monday morning.
According to Officer Joe Avery of the New Haven Police Department, Howard Stewart intentionally set his girlfriend, Christina Lee, 35, and their home ablaze after an argument stemming from Saturday night. Lee suffered second and third degree burns.
The incident was reported shortly before 8 a.m.
Stewart's 12-year-old step-daughter was also doused in a flammable liquid. Witnesses say the 12-year-old daughter rescued the 3-month-old daughter of Lee and Stewart by taking her out of a crib and fleeing the house.
The three-month-old child was not doused with the liquid, Officer Avery said.
Stewart was located by police walking in the area of James Street and Grand Avenue and turned himself in. He was detained and faces several charges including first degree arson and assault.
Prosecutors say this incident was an act of retaliation for the 12-year-old reporting actions that Stewart had done to her.
"He treated her with the utmost respect. They seemed like a loving couple," Lawrence Gore, a neighbor, said.
The children are currently with their grandmother.
Stewart has a criminal record including domestic violence convictions. Stewart was incarcerated for one year.
