Marty Brennaman: Cubs Fans Are the Most Obnoxious in Major League Baseball

Lets take a look at both sides

No, I'm going to keep blaming Bartman. I doubt you have ever played baseball, or if you have you won't admit the obvious. This is what I have heard from those who have played the game -- it isn't a game played on adreneline (sp?) like football, basketball or hockey. The slowness of it means that players have too much time to think and therefore too much time to dwell on every negative (like a boneheaded "fan" interfering with a foul ball when he should have known that every out is precious). Karma plays a big role in baseball.

If Bartman allows Alou to at least TRY to make that catch, Gonzales doesn't boot the ground ball. It's all psychological, my Cubs-hating friend. And what the hell is the reference to Game 7? Did any sane person think the Cubs would win Game 7 after what happened in Game 6? Psychology. Any Red Sox fan will agree with me here. Did you honestly think the Red Sox were going to win Game 7 of the 1986 World Series? Are you even old enough to remember it?

And what about your cheap shot about Cubs fans upset about trades? Total nonsense. Yes, I love the Cubs. Loved them from the day I first stepped into Wrigley Field as a little girl. Loved them since my first bratwurst at Murphy's, seeing all the wonderful people digging on the sunshine and the baseball and the love. Loved Billy Williams and Glenn Beckert. Please forgive me for rooting for the wrong team.

Peace

Okay, I'm gonna tackle both sides of this issue, being a baseball fan as well as someone who wants to get into sportswriting in the future, I feel as though we should look at this.

First off, Goodie, grow up. You're making yourself look as bad as those so-called obnoxious fans on the north side. Okay maybe they take superstitions to extremes up there, but doesn't every team have some kind of weird thing to pin their misery on, or have we all ready forgotten the Red Sox blaming the trade of Babe Ruth up until 04? Stop thinking the Cubs are the only team out there that uses curses as an excuse THEY AREN'T.

Second off, Jean, leave Bartman alone. HE wasn't the reason the Cubs lost that game. Sure I know the adrenaline gets high when you're in that kind of situation, but did Alou HAVE to act like that after the ball, which there was no guarentee he was gonna catch anyway, got knocked away? Why didn't Alex Gonzales make that play on a simple grounder? Why didn't Dusty Baker take Prior out after that sequence of events? Why didn't he light a fire under them before or during game 7? And don't give me that psychology excuse either, or have you forgotten in both game 7's you mentioned both the Red Sox and Cubs had leads in those games? I know for a fact having played on losing teams in high school, that after you've gotten beat, you gotta stand up shake it off and go back to it no matter how devastating the loss.

And I will also blame management on this more than some dumb goat, you have to get good players for your team if you hope to compete, and you need a good combination of talent developed by your minor league teams as well as some skilled veterans you get however you can.

I want to see the Cubs finally break through, the very first glove I owned was one that was licensed by Ryne Sandberg, not long after seeing that I found out what team he played for, I found Cubs games on after school on WGN and I've been a fan, especially considering all I had to root for in my area was Baltimore (Damn you Angelos!). Even though the Nats are now in town I still love watching an afternoon Cubs game on TV and I want to make it out to a Cubs game one day. But I still find it sad after all these years, the Cubs fans won't forgive Bartman on a play that may not have had the desired result if he was there or not.

I will never leave Bartman alone. He is the No. 1 embarrassment in Cubs history. He's supposed to be a Cubs fan, for God's sake, yet getting a free baseball is more important to him than his team winning a pennant. What a guy!

Can you imagine what would have happened to Bartman if he had done that at Yankee Stadium? He would have been lucky to leave with his life.

I never understood fans who risk being thrown out of the ballpark, not to mention serious injury, reaching for a batted ball. It's just a ball, people. You can buy one at any mall. There are few things more pathetic than seeing a grown man come to the ballpark with a baseball glove. Have some dignity!

As a Cubs fan, and someone that (not by choice) lives in Wrigleyville, I'd have to agree that Cubs fans are definitely the most obnoxious.

Probably because Cubs fans are mostly drunk frat kids and other idiots and I have to deal with them anytime I step out of my house if there's a game letting out or about to start.

This is why I don't go to Cubs games. Just watch on TV.

I suppose you also have something against grown men wearing a jersey or baseball hat to the game as well?

Mairead, I'll tell you about 29 other neighborhoods in the USA in which you should never live because you will see the same things 81 times from April-September.

Did I say that? No? Then why do you assume I feel that way? You're on a fishing trip now.

Hate is eating away at your brain.

You made a comment on guys who bring gloves. Granted i havent done that since god knows when but people who make similar arguments about the glove aspect say guys are being childish for wearing jerseys or ball caps to games etc etc

Just seeing where you stand

Yeah, I've lived in a lot of other neighborhoods and demographics plays a big part. I live in a predominately yuppie neighborhood with a pretty big gay community, the latter of which doesn't annoy me in the slightest. Who goes to cubs games? Yuppies. Who else? Suburban frat kids that like to drink and they come out in droves.

I mean, you're right, there are other neighborhoods like that, but that doesn't make my point any less valid.

No, you're just trying to put words in my mouth. Words I never said. You know where I stand, my young Sox honk. Not that it's any of your business.

Only yuppies and suburban frat kids, eh? Which am I and my husband?

Speaking of putting words in people's mouths, I don't remember saying the word "only."

It was insinuated that the majority of Cubs fans are yuppies and drunk frat kids, though.

My suggestion is that you never live near any MLB ballpark. Fans are pretty much the same everywhere. Drunkenness is a concern for every MLB club. Cubs fans don't have an exclusive on drinking too much. Don't pick on us.

I've been to MLB games in 16 major league cities. Ironically, the rowdiest bunch I ever witnessed inside the park was in Detroit in the 1980s when alcohol was banned. The profanity would have made Joe Pesci blush.

I'll be sure to take you up on that suggestion.

Anyway, it's not such a problem that I would want to move, I'm not exactly right next door to the stadium, more like a few blocks.

But my opinion of Cubs fans being annoying still stands.

The end.

Despite having a crush on Peter Tork, I was never a Monkees fan. Much more into Bob Dylan and the Doors. Nice try, though.

Cubs fan? Yup, and proud of it!
