Mavericks vs. Lakers ... the end of the Lakers as we know them

It's a good day to be a Mavs fan . The Mavericks have brought down the Lakers Dynasty as we knew it .

Here are several things we learned in the process.

Phil Jackson rides off into the sunset to his Montana ranch . The guy deserves a rest , but it sure felt great for the Mavs to be the team that made it happen

Like Magic Johnson said. The Lakers are now an old slow unathletic team . This team needs to gutted and rebuilt . Problem with that is they have so many guys under contract for lots of money .

Odom & especially Bynum embarressed the Lakers franchise in front of a national audience . Bynum should be heavily fined and suspended for several of next years games .

Kobe is no longer the best player in the league . In this series Kobe was nothing but a glorified jumpshooter . In four games Kobe had ONE LAYUP & AND ZERO DUNKS . AT this point in his career he isn`t capable of carrying a team by-himself . In the battle of superstars Dirk dominated Kobe . It will be interesting to see if Kobe can make the necessary adjustments to his game that Jordan did once he realized he wasn't the most uber-athletic player on the court .

I wouldn't agree with blowing up the whole team. With the nucleus of Kobe, Gasol, Bynum and Odom, the Lakers just need to fill in some pieces on their bench. They should keep Artest as he maintains a defensive presence. But the Lakers need a point guard. It really depends on the new coach. Phil didn't need any prolific point guard. Now that he is gone, the offense style may change.

Kobe is still the best player in the league. Who else can you name as the best? Rose is still developing. He has gotten better on his outside shot, but he still has a way to go. Lebron? He is now Scottie Pippen on that team. Fans are starting to realize Miami is WADE'S team. Dirk? Um, no.

That wraps up another year. David Stern loses ratings for his Finals because no one in the West will bring in large ratings. Yeah, I'm pretty familiar with Laker history. I remember the 80s like it was yesterday. They went to 4 straight at the beginning of the decade, winning 2 of them. They did go to 3 straight Finals in 87, 88 and 89, but that 3rd one was the kicker. The Lakers had issues when Byron Scott went down, then the series was over once Magic Johnson got hurt. The Pistons swept the Lakers, but I do wonder what would have happened had Magic and Byron were healthy. The Lakers swept their way to the Finals that year, only to get swept in the Finals...

The good thing is, these are still the Los Angeles Lakers. They will be back. It won't take us 20+ years to be relevant again. I am against the notion that they have to start over. The nucleus of the team did go to 3 straight Finals. Just have to retool certain areas and lot of that will have to do with the new coach.

But the real concern is the pending lockout. If people thought the NFL lockout was bad, this NBA lockout will make that seem like a party in Vegas. whoever wins the title this year better enjoy it, because we might not see basketball for a while...

anybody who listen how great & unbeatable your Lakers are . I say you because

Now for the OP:

I haven't been watching postseason this year so until this thread came up I knew nothing about the Lakers out of the playoffs. When my hometown team only wins 15 games all season, I'm in no position to criticize anyone who's team made it into the playoffs.

Here's my take on this thing:

It's the playoffs; someone's gotta win and someone's gotta' lose. The Lakers lost--I'm going to take a long reach and say that at least Kobe Bryant didn't choke and lose focus of his leadership and trash the series only to create a so-called "dynasty" in South Beach becoming a sidekick. So I don't have that much to say about the Lakers being out this year.

I'm not a big fan of the Lakers, nor the Pittsburgh Steelers, but they both have something in common. They are juggernauts in their respective sports genre. They have earned plenty of rings and they show up at the playoffs almost every year. Nothing can take away from those facts.

So if you're hating on the Lakers, enjoy-here's the chance to do it because I don't think you'll get another chance any time soon after this season. I don't doubt that they will be back next year. Maybe they'll win it all, maybe they won't. But I don't doubt in my mind that they will be there.

Yes, exactly. Then of course the next day comes the too late apology from Bynum hoping the league goes easier on him with the inevitable suspension he will get.
