There are many for me. The first dog in our house that I remember was Pogo, a little mutt of indeterminate heritage. Short hair, maybe 20 lbs. He was a loyal and loving little guy who often followed me around when I roamed my little hometown in search of adventure or trouble, depending on my mood. When we came home after a day away or vacation he greeted us by jumping up and down, licking our faces and running in circles. It was a sad day when my father took him to the vet that last time.

The first cat I remember was Bomber, an orange and white tabby. Even as a kitten he loved to climb as high as possible then jump off, which made us think of dive bombers, hence the name. One day dad was backing out of the driveway and poor Bomber was killed, which made dad feel terrible. But, it was not his fault. Just one of those things.

There is something about the unconditional love our pets offer us. They ask so little, and give so much in return. I will never understand people who get a dog, cat or any pet then ignore them. What's the point in that?

i just got my first apartment this week and have been getting SUPER emotional about my dogs back at my mom's house. one of them in particular is my baby: mona, a 2-year-old boxer/german shepherd/pit bull mix. she's pretty much my life. i've only been here since sunday, but i miss her terribly.

Congratulations on getting your own place, I hope Mona can join you soon. Amazing, how quickly we bond with our pets. 🙂

Derekage1.jpgMy parents got me a Cocker Spaniel named Doodles before I was even a year old. We had him until I was about 6 when the neighborhood bully decided to pick on me. Doodles broke his ankle......earning Doodles an early retirement to a friend of Dad's who lived in the country. The kid never screwed with me again. A few years later Dad built his dream home in the country and for many years we always had beagles and an English Setter, always named Beau.

My first dog was Freckles, a little beagle mix. She slept with me every night. When I lost her, I felt like I lost a part of myself. It was right around the time I lost my grandmother - and dealing with back to back deaths wasn't easy. I had never lost anyone before.

My first cat was Chelsea - a seal point Siamese. I lost her in 2002 - the first time I'd ever had to make the euthanasia decision. She got me through vet school and my parents' divorce.

Each one adds so much to our lives like you said Bug. A good friend, a good listener, unconditional love, loyalty. Never complaining about the quality of food. Always just looking for love in return. Which isn't too much to ask for in exchange for all that they give us 🙂

When I was an infant and toddler Shep, an Australian Shepherd was part of the family. I don't remember him but I've seen some pictures. I've been told my mother would set me out in the front yard in a crib and later let my roam around when I began walking and Shep kept an eagle eye on me, never letting me wander too far and if anyone got too close he would chase them off. If I headed towards the street he would round me up and get me back to safety. 🙂

My husband and I just got a pure bread Pomeranian. He's only 4 months.

Eventhough we have only had him for about a month, I can't tell you how much he has "saved me" in many cases, he's given me a need to continue trying to better myself. Being over come with depression nearly my whole life and battling it now at it's all time high, I never realised how an animal like this could change my life so drastically. I cannot imagine what life would be like without him. Eventhough we have had him a short while, it took no time at all for him to weasel his way into my heart.

He makes me laugh when i'm down, licks my tears when i'm sad, and overall has lived up to his name of "man's best friend".
Sometimes people come into your life for a reason. I believe it is the same with animals. I have no idea where my life would be right now without him. I am so thankful for him, and I could never repay him for all he has done for me, but I can sure try!

:bump: Come on guys! This is a great thread, don't let this one die yet! I'm sure we've all had memorable animals in our lives in some form or another!!

i almost forgot! my friend steve fostered an abandoned baby raccoon for a few weeks this summer, and the little guy and i became fast friends.

we had to let him go after about six weeks because he was getting pretty aggressive. the night before we let him outside, though, he climbed up onto my lap and licked my face. sigh. i miss him. :')

My first pet hamster. 😀 He was like a hoover the way he stuffed his mouth with any dropped food at the base of his cage.

Felix. -- He was 1/2 of the first pets I've ever owned before. -- He passed away last April. I'm honestly still not over it. He was an amazing cat and was 'there for me' as much as a cat COULD be i suppose, when i was going through a lot of shit. He used to stay on my bed until I'd fall asleep for the night.. then he'd wander off and do kitty stuff. 🙂

Mr. Bojangles. -- Came after Felix. Has the personality of a dog. Goofball kitty Derp face that I believe is mildly masochistic. He's also my 'Guard' Kitty and is MOLTO suspicious of any men folk hanging in my bubble.

My one cat, Friend (weird name but it fits).

Also, the eight brand new kittens I get to care for until I can personally find each a good home.

....anybody want a kitten?

I wish. I would take you up on that if my husband wasn't allergic to cats. How's the kitty sitting going? You should post some pictures!

I grew up with a black toy poodle, she became 10 years old. Amazing dog, really loved her and it was so hard when we had to put her to sleep. She had gotten diabetes, and unfortunately it had came pretty far. Next step was pain and mediciation. Her name was Lotte and she was truly a family dog of ours. I'm thinking about getting me a poodle my self later in life. 🙂
