San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman will be placed on injured reserve so he can undergo total reconstructive surgery on his knee, a Chargers source and a source close to Merriman told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Merriman was attempting to play this season with two torn ligaments in his left knee.

The knee problem dates back to the end of the 2007 season.

I guess he realized what everyone else did a long time ago. It would've been interesting to see if he could've lasted the entire season.

I appreciate his drive to compete, but it was stupid for him to even try to play in the first place. Good news that he's getting the problem taken care of.

About time he packed it in. It'd be a shame had he gotten hurt and ruined his career. (And had he gotten the surgery a couple weeks ago he might have come back for the playoffs/super bowl, IMO.)

And more good news for the Steelers, they're enemies star players continue to go down!

Ok, time for me to set the record straight...

Yeah, Brady's down, now Merriman and who's next? Sure, it makes it easier for us, but in all honesty, I want those teams to be healthy and at their best. That way, when Pittsburgh stomps the shit out of them, there are no excuses. Because in case you haven't noticed, whenever the Steelers win something they weren't expected to, it's nothing but crying about cheating, hurt players, biased referees etc etc. 🙄

So yeah, I fucking hate Brady and the Pats, but personally, I wish he was healthy. Because when Pittsburgh rolls the Pats in regular season, all I'm gonna hear is "if Brady wasn't hurt, Pittsburgh would have never won". Sorry, but like someone else said, Brady is NOT the Patriots. They have many other big name players, so there should be no excuse.

Not that it matters. There will be crying no matter what when the Steelers are the first team to get 6 Super Bowl rings this year.

Should've been down long time ago. Being a hero is one thing, being stupid is another. He had the future to look forward to, not the present to which he knows the Chargers weren't winning this year anyway
