Back in May, I attended three games at CitiField, Dodgers hosted by the Mets. (The Dodgers won two out of three.)
In the last three days, I attended three games at Yankee Stadium, Dodgers hosted by the Yankees. (The Dodgers won two out of three.)
But this post is not about the games. It is about the fans at those stadiums.
At all six games, I attended wearing a Brooklyn Dodgers baseball cap, wearing a Dodgers t-shirt with the name and number of a particular current Dodgers player on it, and carrying or wearing a Dodger jacket in case it got cold.
In all three games at Yankee Stadium, a total of only one Yankee fan said anything derogatory to me. It was semi-obscene, "Dodgers suck! And Andre Ethier sucks most of all!" (I was wearing an Andre Ethier t-shirt that day.) Several Yankee fans said friendly things to me, most notably, one remarking that it was good to see some Brooklyn fans still attending Dodger games. At each game, several employees of the Yankees told me, "Enjoy the game."
In all three games at CitiField, several Mets fans directed obscenities at me. The worst was, "Motherfucking Dodger fans don't belong here! This is our house. Go back to L.A.!" Not one employee of the Mets offered me a friendly greeting.
(This paled in comparison to the obscene remarks, threats of violence, and threats to kill him directed at Chase Utley, the Dodgers second baseman, but that is another subject and off topic for this post.)
My conclusion is simple. Yankee fans are, by and large, decent people who recognize that not everybody there roots for their team. Mets fans include a large number of ranting cretins who can't imagine that some people there don't root for the Mets. Some of this difference is also reflected by the training of their respective stadium staffs.
